Softball Earns Split Against Saginaw Valley With Late Rally in Game One

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (23-20 overall, 8-14 GLIAC) split a home league doubleheader on Thursday against visiting Saginaw Valley State University (21-21 overall, 12-12 GLIAC).  WSU rallied for a 3-2 triumph in game one, while the Cardinals claimed the nightcap 8-0.

GAME ONE RECAP

SVSU took a 1-0 lead just five pitches into the game on a double by Lauren Bachert, a wild pitch, and an RBI single by Danielle Hamilton.

The Cardinals extended their advantage to 2-0 in the fourth on a double by Aubree Mouthaan, an infield single by Maddy Burgess and a WSU throwing error.

The Warriors cut their deficit in half in the fifth as junior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) had a leadoff single, with classmate Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) stealing second after going in to run for Messina.  Sophomore Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) hit an 0-1 offering with SVSU second basman Meredith Rousse making a diving stop but Guitar was able to score from second with a head first slide under the tag.

Saginaw Valley had a chance to extend its lead in the seventh with a runner on second and one out, but Warrior senior Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) made a diving catch in left, and the next batter popped out.

Junior Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) walked on five pitches to begin the bottom of the seventh.  After hitting a 1-1 pitch just foul, Messina then singled down the left field line on the next delivery.  Freshman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt.  Following a ground out, Adams hit a 1-2 pitch down the left field line to score both McClounie and pinch-runner Hailey Lazarek (Allen Park, Mich.).
