Baseball Drops Series Opener at Northwood

A five-run second inning proved to be too much for WSU to overcome.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (22-17 overall, 10-10 GLIAC) hit the road to take on first-place Northwood (29-11 overall, 16-5 GLIAC) on Friday evening.  The Warriors dropped game one 9-3 to snap a six-game winning streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams were scoreless in the first inning but the Timberwolves exploded for five runs on four hits and two Warriors errors in the bottom of the second inning.  Wayne State loaded the bases in the top of the third inning.  A fielder's choice RBI from Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) put WSU on the board and an RBI groundout by Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day) trimmed NU's lead to 5-2.  WSU's third run of the inning came on an RBI single from Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson).

- Two more hits for Northwood in the top of the fourth inning netted a run and pushed the home advantage to 6-3.  Two more runs in the fifth gave NU an 8-3 lead and a bases-loaded walk stretched the deficit to six, 9-3, in the sixth inning.  WSU was unable to create any offense during the final three innings.

AT THE PLATE
- Jorah tallied two of WSU's four hits and drove in a run.

ON THE MOUND
- Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) (5-3) allowed four earned runs over four and a 1/3 innings on eight hits and four walks.  Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) pitched two and 2/3 innings, allowing an earned run before Nick Cowen (Tecumseh, Mich.) worked a scoreless eighth inning.

UP NEXT
- The four-game series continues on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Timberwolves and first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
