Softball Drops Two On 2018 Senior Day

DETROIT – The Wayne State University softball team (24-23 overall, 9-17 GLIAC) suffered a pair of home setbacks on Senior Day.  The Warriors were edged 9-8 in the opener by Ferris State University (16-28 overall, 10-18 GLIAC), before the Bulldogs claimed game two by a 10-2 score in five innings.

GAME ONE RECAP

WSU grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second as junior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) was hit by a pitch.  Freshman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) followed with a single advancing runner Hailey Lazarek (Allen Park, Mich.) to second.  After a line drive out to centerfield and a strikeout, senior Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.) delivered an RBI single to center.

FSU's Sarah Meredith smacked a three-run home run to right center accounting for three unearned runs following a Wayne State error on the leadoff batter in the inning.

The Warriors tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third as junior Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) had a one-out single, and Messina reached when her fly ball to right center was dropped.  Junior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) had an RBI single to left with Messina scoring on a Bulldog fielding error to knot the game at 3-3.

WSU took a 5-3 lead in the fourth as freshman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) lined a 3-1 offering through the first baseman's legs.  Following an FSU miscue, freshman Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) reached on a bunt single to load the bases.  McClounie followed with a two-run single up the middle.

Bulldog Emily Reed had a two-run double in the fifth following a walk and a Wayne State error.  Katie Scheuer had an RBI double accounting for the second unearned run of the frame.

Ferris increased its advantage to 8-5 in the sixth on a two-run double by Logan Fleming following a Warrior error and a single.

The Warriors battled back to tie the game at 8-8 on a three-run home run by Messina, her first collegiate round-tripper.  Sophomore Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) started the inning with a bunt single, and McClounie worked a walk with one out.

Scheuer led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run to make it 9-8.

IN THE CIRCLE

Guitar (15-9) allowed nine runs (three earned) on eight hits in seven innings.  She struck out nine and walked four.

Abby Highway (9-8) earned the win despite allowing eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits in six innings.  She struck out one and walked five.  Sam Bates had a perfect seventh inning for her first save of the year.

Wayne State responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.  Luca singled and went to second on a ground out.  Turkalj followed with an RBI single.  After an infield hit by freshman Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.).  Both runners advanced on a foul out, with pinch-runner Kelsey Ramus (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota) scoring on an infield single by Messina.  Buchanan would have scored the tying run except for a diving stop by FSU shortstop Logan Fleming.
