Women's Tennis Falls to GVSU, 5-4, In NCAA Regional

GRANDVILLE, Mich. – The seventh-seeded Wayne State University women's tennis team (18-9 overall) fell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, losing 5-4 to host and No. 2-seed Grand Valley State University (23-3 overall) at Grandville Middle School.

DOUBLES RESULTS
The Lakers won all three doubles matches.

In the first flight, junior Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) and freshman Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont. / Robert Bateman S.S.) fell 9-7 to GVSU's Allie Sweeney and Aimee Moccia.

At No. 2, seniors Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) and Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil / Unificado) were defeated 9-7 at the hands of Madi Ballard and Nikki Heiniger.

Freshmen Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) Brianna Douglas (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne) fell 8-6 to Abby Perkins and Liv Christman.

SINGLES RESULTS
The Warriors nearly rallied by winning four of the first five contests in singles.

Mitrache, playing at No. 1, was the first one off the court after beating Ballard, 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 4, Ghellere fell to Perkins, 6-2, 6-2.

Facing a match defeat with one more loss, WSU won the next three contests.  At No. 5, Liong beat Liv Hanover (6-3, 6-3), which was followed by a third-flight win for Da-Silva over Moccia (2-6, 6-1, 6-3).  At No. 2, Kuznetsova won 6-4, 7-5 over Sweeney.

GVSU clinched the win after Heiniger defeated Irena van Meer (Amsterdam, Netherlands), 6-3, 6-4.
