Baseball Falls in Finale to Split Series

A late comeback ran out of steam for the Warriors.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (24-18 overall, 12-11 GLIAC) lost at Northwood (30-13 overall, 17-7 GLIAC) on Sunday, 5-3.  The Warriors staged a late comeback attempt with two runs in the ninth inning but the rally fell short as WSU finished with a series split from the first-place Timberwolves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Northwood scored twice in the bottom of the first inning powered by three hits, including a double.  A JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) home run led off the fourth inning for the Green & Gold's first run of the game.  NU answered with a run on an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning and added a run in the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead.

- The home team used a hit and a WSU error to take a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.

- In the ninth inning, Conti drew a leadoff walk and Troy Daring Jr. (Brampton, Ont.) followed with an infield single. A Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day) single loaded the bases before NU retired the next two batters.  Patrick Adams (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle) extended the game with a two-run single into left field, cutting the home lead to 5-3.  However, a strikeout by Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) ended the game.

AT THE PLATE
- Adams, Conti and MacLean all tallied two-hit games, while Adams paced the lineup with two RBI.

ON THE MOUND
- Hunter Brown (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) (2-2) started and lasted six innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out five batters.  Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) allowed an unearned run in his two innings of work and retired four batters via the strikeout.

UP NEXT
- The Warriors will host the final series of the regular season on Friday against Grand Valley State at 3:00 p.m.
