Baseball Tops Urbana in Rain-Shortened Game

DETROIT -- For the second time in six days the Wayne State University baseball program (12-13 overall) had a game suspended in the fifth inning due to weather conditions.  This time Urbana (5-22 overall) was in town for a single nine-inning contest.  The Warriors were winning 8-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when the heavy rains started to fall and forced game officials to call the game.  Both teams agreed to have it be an official contest and WSU would win 8-1.

The Warriors scored five runs on five hits and one UU error in the bottom of the first inning.   Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) started the scoring with a sacrifice fly.  Ryan Mergener (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central) followed with an RBI single into center field.  A passed ball and a throwing error accounted for the inning's third and fourth runs before Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) capped the scoring with an RBI single up the middle.

The Green & Gold added three runs on two hits in the bottom of the third inning.  Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) collected an RBI with a single through the left side and Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) pushed WSU's lead to 8-0 with a two-run double to left center.  The Blue Knights got on the board with an RBI single down the right field line in the top of the fifth inning.

Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) started and did not allow a run on one hit and four walks, while striking out three batters.  Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) replaced Hovde and pitched two innings, allowing a run and striking out three batters.

Wayne State is scheduled to play a four game series at Purdue Northwest beginning on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
