DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (10-10 overall, 3-2 GLIAC) won two of three doubles contests but could not overcome the 17th-ranked Ferris State Bulldogs (16-2 overall, 6-0 GLIAC), falling 5-4 at the Multipurpose Indoor Facility Sunday morning.
DOUBLES RESULTS
Sophomore
Mats Westkamp (Bonn, Germany) and freshman
Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) won at the first singles flight, and juniors
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) and
Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) did the same at No. 2.
Westkamp and Karcz won 8-5 over Nur Adim Iswan and Steward Sell, while Mertz and Vane were 8-4 winners over Austin De Bruyne and Daniil Tarantinov.
At No. 3, senior
Harvey Reed (Winchester, England) and sophomore
Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) were defeated at the hands of Pablo Munoz Baroja and Mathis Guerre (9-7).
SINGLES RESULTS
Westkamp met Sell again at No. 1 singles, falling 6-3, 6-3.
With the matched tied 2-2, Mertz got a point for WSU with a 6-4, 6-2 win over DeBruyne.
The match was even again after No. 2 singles, as Vane fell 6-2, 6-3 to Iswan.
The Bulldogs took their first advantage with a win at fifth singles, as Reed lost 6-3, 6-0 to Baroja.
FSU clinched the matched with a third singles win. There, Karcz fell 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-3 to Tarantinov.
Sammons earned the fourth point with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Guerre.
