Football Upended 28-6 at #22-Indianapolis

Hounds rushing and three miscues leads to WSU setback.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Wayne State University football team (1-1 overall) suffered a 28-6 setback at 22nd-ranked Indianapolis (1-1 overall) on a rainy Key Stadium Field Saturday night.

The Greyhounds drove 76 yards in 10 plays on their second drive of the game to take a 7-0 lead on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jake Purichia to Daveon Bell.

The Warriors answered with a sustained drive as senior running back Deiontae Nicholas (Chesterfield, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) had three carries for 37 yards.  On WSU's first play in the red zone, WSU was assessed a holding penalty.  A bad snap on a field goal attempt led to an interception.

Five plays later UIndy led 14-0 after a 12-yard touchdown run by Tyre Lee.

On the ensuing drive, WSU crossed midfield but a "mysterious" clipping penalty pushed the Warriors back to their side of midfield.

Late in the first half, a UIndy punt by Jacob Lafree was downed at the Wayne State one.  WSU sophomore punter Taylor McCarty (Oxford, Mich. / Lake Orion) was able to get a 42 yard punt out of his end zone, but Bell returned it 21 yards as a penalty on UIndy was waived off.

On the very next play, Purichia tossed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Malik Higgins with 18 seconds remaining before intermission.

Late in the third period following a WSU punt, the Greyhounds extended their lead to 28-0 on a 52-yard touchdown run by Toriano Clinton.

Wayne State avoided its first shutout in six years (Sept. 8, 2012, at Ashland 7-0) by driving 82 yards in seven plays in 1:44 late in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore signal caller Jake AmRhein (South Elgin, Ill.) completed 3-of-5 passes on the drive, including a five-yard scoring pass to junior Tyler Blaszczak (Brownstown, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) with 11 seconds remaining.  AmRhein also scrambled for seven yards on the drive.

TEAM STATS

Indianapolis held a 291 to 184 edge in rushing yards, and a 386 to 237 margin in total offense.  UIndy also led in time of possession (33:43-26:17) and total return yards (64-43)

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Nicholas rushed for a team-high 80 yards on six attempts, while senior Demetrius Stinson (Detroit, Mich. / Douglass) gained 66 yards on 18 carries.

Both AmRhein and senior D.J. Zezula (Clarkston, Mich.) were 3-of-9 passing, with AmRhein throwing for 53 yards and a touchdown.

Blaszczak had a team-high two receptions for 39 yards.

Senior Kyle Toth (Hudsonville, Mich.) and junior Leon Eggleston (Sylvania, Ohio / Southview) tied for the team lead with seven tackles, with Toth notching a forced fumble.

LEADING THE GREYHOUNDS

Clinton rushed for a game-high 131 yards on 14 attempts, while Al McKeller gained 90 yards on 16 carries.
