Football Downs No. 27-Ashland, 42-41 In Double Overtime

Nicholas and Roberson account for 411 all-purpose yards.

DETROIT – The Wayne State University football team (4-3 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) recorded a thrilling 42-41 double overtime victory over visiting Ashland University (4-3 overall, 3-2, GLIAC) Saturday evening at Tom Adams Field.  It was WSU's second home field victory over a team ranked in the top 27 in that week's AFCA National Coaches Poll (WSU defeated then 25th-ranked Saginaw Valley on Sept. 28).

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors drove 83 yards in eight plays on its second possession to take a 7-0 lead.  The scoring play was a 47-yard reception by graduate student Deiontae Nicholas (Chesterfield, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) on third-and-nine.

Ashland tied the game on a 22-yard scamper by Gei'vonni Washington.

WSU answered with a 55-yard touchdown drive on seven plays culminating in a two-yard plunge by senior James Hill (Livonia, Mich. / Clarenceville).

Wayne State's Jake AmRhein (South Elgin, Ill.) had a punt downed at the AU three.  The Eagles garnered six yards in five plays forcing a punt which senior Darece Roberson, Jr. (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores) returned to the Ashland 40.  Roberson then hauled in a 40-yard scoring strike from AmRhein on the very next play to give the Warriors a 21-7 lead, which they held until halftime.

In a series of events similar to last year, WSU senior linebacker Leon Eggleston (Sylvania, Ohio / Southview) had an interception chance on the first series of the second half, but unlike last year's drop, this time Eggleston was credited with a 35-yard pick six to increase the Wayne State advantage to 28-7.

Following an interception by sophomore Tieler Houston (Waterford, Mich. / Clarkston) on AU's next possession, the Warriors went 78 yards in 10 plays to lead 35-7 with 5:46 remaining in the third period.  A big play on the drive was a 22-yard reception by freshman Trevonte Davis (Flint, Mich. / Hamady) on third-and-18, which led to a one-yard TD run by Hill two plays later.

Ashland then roared back with four consecutive touchdown drives to knot the game at 35-35 on a four-yard catch by Logan Bolin with 24 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Wayne State had the ball first in overtime, but a 41-yard field goal attempt was blocked.

Ashland place-kicker Satchel Denton then missed a 33-yard attempt on the ensuing possession.

In the second overtime, Washington had a six-yard touchdown run, but Warrior sophomore Charles Ellington (Dayton, Ohio / Vandalia-Butler) blocked Denton's PAT attempt.

On WSU's first play of the second extra session, Roberson caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from AmRhein and true freshman kicker Niccolo Seilo (Royal Oak, Mich. / U. of Detroit Jesuit) drilled the PAT through the uprights out of the hold of redshirt freshman Chase Churchill (Richmond, Mich.) with true freshman Lukas Cusac (Pontiac, Mich. / Notre Dame Prep) on the snap.
