DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis squad (8-0 overall, 8-0 GLIAC) notched a 5-2 victory over the previously unbeaten Grand Valley State (7-1 overall, 7-1 GLIAC) at home on Saturday. WSU clinched the No. 1 seed for the GLIAC Tournament next weekend.
DOUBLES RESULTS
Junior
Irena van Meer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and freshman
Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) were first off the courts after sweeping Liv Hanover and Agata Szewczuk, 6-0, at No. 3 doubles.
Juniors
Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont.) and
Teodora Radu (Ramnicu Valcea, Romania) clinched the doubles point for WSU at the second flight, with a 6-2 win against Mrija Leko and Taylor Barrett.
At No. 1 doubles, sophomore
Laura Cazacu (London, England) and junior
Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) came back to notch a 7-6(2) tiebreaker victory over Vera Griva and Marily Canellopoulos.
SINGLES RESULTS
Liong was the first to finish, winning her No. 2 singles match vs. Leko (6-1, 6-2).
Sophomore
Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) tallied a win at No. 6 singles against Szewczuk (6-2, 6-0).
At No. 5 singles, Laynes clinched the Green and Gold win vs. Hanover (6-3, 6-0).
Cazacu fell to the undefeated Laker, Griva, at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-0).
Da-Silva dropped her No. 3 singles match to Barrett (6-3, 6-4).
At No. 4 singles, Radu won in a super tiebreaker versus Canellopoulos (6-2, 4-6, 10-5).
