Volleyball Wins Third Straight at Parkside

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (13-11 overall, 6-7 GLIAC) won at Parkside (8-17 overall, 3-10 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon in five sets.  The Warriors won set one (25-23), before dropping sets two (22-25) and three (19-25).  Wayne State would win the fifth and decisive set (15-11).

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU won the first three points of the opening set as Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) and Summer Farris (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) teamed up for a block to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.  A service ace from Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) pushed Wayne State's advantage to 11-6.  A kill by Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) kept the momentum with the Green & Gold as WSU led 14-9.  Another point from Krenz made it 20-17.  Parkside made it close down the stretch, trimming the margin to one, 24-23 but a kill by Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.) gave the Warriors a 25-23 victory.

The Rangers led the second set 7-3 and 10-5 before Parkside broke the set open with a 7-0 run to put the home team up 17-6.  The Warriors would storm back to trail 23-20 and 24-22 but WSU would run out of time as Parkside won 25-22.

The third game went back-and-forth and Wayne State led 6-5 after a kill from Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore).  UWP responded and led 15-9 to force WSU to use a timeout.  The Rangers controlled the tempo the rest of the way to win the set 25-19.

A kill from Krenz gave Wayne State a 3-2 lead early in the fourth set and a block by Fike and Duffield made it 7-4 in favor of the visitors.  After the Rangers trimmed WSU's lead to 11-9, a 3-0 run moved Wayne State in front 14-9.  The rally included two kills from VanderWal.  The lead grew to 17-12 after kills from VanderWal and Krenz.  The Green & Gold forced a fifth set by winning 25-19.

A kill from Fike gave WSU a 3-2 lead in the fifth set and Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) delivered an ace on the following play.  Wayne State led 9-4 after a 4-0 run, including back-to-back kills by VanderWal.  The Rangers cut their deficit to 10-7 and WSU answered by taking a timeout.  Farris and Wagner blocked a UWP attack for its 13th point of the set.  Another block and a kill by Krenz sealed the 15-11 victory and a 3-2 match win.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Wagner finished with 17 kills, while Krenz had 16 and VanderWal had 15 spikes.  Duffield dished out 36 assists, while Wagner also anchored the defense with 20 digs.
