Volleyball Drops Semifinal Match at Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- In the semifinals of the 2019 GLIAC Tournament, the fifth-seeded Wayne State University volleyball program (17-12 overall) saw its seven-match winning streak come to an end at No. 1 seed and 17th-ranked Ferris State (24-5 overall) in three sets on Saturday afternoon.  Wayne State dropped the first set 25-12 and the second game 25-21 before falling the third set 25-17.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors led early in the opening set 2-1 after a pair of blocks from senior Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central).  The game was tied at 6-6 after a point by junior Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.).  Wayne State trailed 15-10 after a 5-0 run by the Bulldogs, forcing head coach Tim Koth to use a timeout.  Ferris State won the first four points out of the break to extend its lead to 19-10 as Koth used his second timeout in an attempt to slow the home rally.  The run reached 11-0 before the Green & Gold ended the rally on a FSU ball-handling error.  However, Ferris State would take control of the match with a 25-12 victory.

Sophomore Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) put WSU on top 2-1 with a kill early in the second set.  Kills from sophomore Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) and Krenz kept the Warriors on top 5-3.  The margin grew to four, 8-4, following blocks by Fike and VanderWal.  Following a home timeout, Wayne State won the next two points, extending its lead to 10-4.  Another block and kill by VanderWal gave WSU a 12-5 advantage.  The Bulldogs trimmed their deficit to 14-13 before a WSU timeout and then tied the set at 14-14 with an ace on the next serve.  The Warriors used an FSU error to tie the set at 16-16.  Ferris State held onto a 22-18 lead but an FSU service error gave the Warriors their 19th point.  WSU fell behind 2-0 in the match after the Bulldogs won the second set 25-21.

A service ace by freshman Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) gave the Green & Gold a 4-3 lead to start the third set.  Ferris State led 8-6 before a kill from VanderWal cut WSU's deficit to one.  The home advantage grew to 12-7 as Koth attempted to settle his team down with a timeout.  However, the momentum stayed with the regular season league champions and FSU led 17-9 as Wayne State took its final timeout.  The Bulldogs would go on to win 25-17 and complete the sweep.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Wagner finished with 10 kills, while sophomore Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) dished out 20 assists.  Wagner also led the defense with 10 digs.

ONE BIG THING
Wayne State hit just .096 compared to FSU's .390 hitting percentage.
