CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Wayne State University baseball program (4-0 overall) continued the series against Tiffin (1-4 overall) on Saturday with the second of three games. The Warriors bested the Dragons 3-2 on a walk-off home run from
Michael MacLean (Bloom field Hills, Mich. / Country Day / Lawrenceville) in the bottom of the 10th inning. The games are being played on the campus of the University of Cincinnati at Marge Schott Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tiffin scored both of its runs in the top of the first inning, powered by three hits to take a 2-0 lead. WSU pitching would settle in and not allow a run for the next nine innings. A fielder's choice from
Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) allowed Troy Daring, Jr. (Brampton, Ont.) to score in the bottom of the second inning. An RBI double by
Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) tied the game at 2-2 later in the inning.
The Dragons threatened in the seventh inning after a leadoff double and a wild pitch put a runner at third base. However,
Max Moon (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Gabriel Richard) was able to get a strikeout and a groundout to escape prevent any damage. Tiffin had runners at second and third with one out in the top of the eighth inning but
Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) (1-0) entered and collected the final two outs, including a play at the plate. A 6-4-3 double play in the bottom of the eighth inning slowed the Green & Gold momentum.
In the top of the 10th inning, TU put the first two runners on base but Hovde used a strikeout, a fielder's choice and a pick off at second base to end the frame. The first batter of the bottom of the 10th inning sent Gunnar Boehm's pitch over the wall in left field to end the game.
AT THE PLATE
CJ Drogosch (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) finished 2-for-4, while Finkbeiner,
Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) and MacLean accounted for the three other hits. MacLean also stole a base.
ON THE MOUND
Hunter Brown (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) started and allowed two runs over six innings with five strikeouts. Moon pitched an inning and a 1/3 and did not allow a run. Hovde earned the win, working two and 2/3 innings and not allowing a run with three punch outs.
