Softball Splits On Tuesday

CLERMONT, Fla. – The 24th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (12-3 overall) split its two games on Tuesday falling 2-1 to No. 17 Indianapolis (14-5 overall), before rallying from a 4-0 deficit to edge Lewis University (5-10 overall) 5-4 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt and a one-out triple to center by Gianni Iannantone.

The lead did not last long as the Warriors knotted the score in the bottom of the inning as senior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) had a one-out single and pinch-runner Alexis Abruzzo (Sugar Grove, Ill.) advanced to third when Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) reached on an error.  Junior outfielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) laced a single up the middle plating Abruzzo.

After leaving two runners on in the fourth, WSU had two runners on the fifth as sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff double and senior third baseman Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) worked a walk.  However, a pop out and line drive double play ended that threat.

In the bottom of the sixth, Messina had a leadoff single, and Clayton had a one-out bunt single.  A pop out and strikeout stranded two more runners.

Taylor Podschweit smacked a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence leading off the top of the seventh for UIndy.  Wayne State tried to rally in its last at bat with a one-out single by McClounie, but back-to-back fielder's choices ended the game.

WSU left nine runners on base, compared to six for the Greyhounds.

IN THE CIRCLE

Senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) suffered the loss (6-2) by allowing two earned runs on five hits in seven innings.  She struck out seven and walked two.

Halie Waters (8-2) limited WSU to one unearned run on seven hits in the complete game.  She struck out seven and walked three.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Messina and Clayton each had two hits, with Clayton recording the lone RBI.

LEADING THE GREYHOUNDS

Five different 'Hounds had one hit, with Taylor Danielson reaching twice via a walk.

GAME TWO RECAP

The second game began auspiciously for the Warriors as the visiting Flyers sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the first scoring four times on five hits and two walks, and leaving the bases loaded.

WSU started to chip away at the deficit with a run in the bottom of the second.  Messina worked a four-pitch walk with one out, and Guitar was plunked on the next pitch.  Following a strikeout, sophomore shortstop Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) singled up the middle to load the bases, with Messina later scoring on a passed ball.

Psenicka had a leadoff double to start the third and advanced to third on a bunt single by McClounie.  McClounie moved to second on a foul out, before junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) lined a shot off the pitcher to load the bases.  Messina's grounder was misplayed allowing Psenicka to score and make it 4-2.  Guitar's fielder's choice produced another run cutting the deficit to one.

The Wayne State offense continued hitting the ball in the fourth as sophomore Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) had a leadoff single and Psenicka followed with a bunt single, however Buchanan was thrown out trying to go first to third.  McClounie walked and sophomore outfielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) ripped the first pitch over the third base bag for an RBI double to knot the game at 4-4.  Lewis threw home on a grounder by Turkalj, but McClounie beat the throw scoring what would be the game-winning run.

WSU would leave 10 runners on base, compared to five for the Flyers.

IN THE CIRCLE

Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) allowed four earned runs on five hits in 0.2 innings with one strikeout and two walks.  Guitar retired 19 of the 21 batters she faced, allowing just one hit and one walk in 6.1 innings.  Guitar had two stretches of retiring nine consecutive batters.

Cassie Shaw (0-3) took the loss after surrendering five runs (three earned) on nine hits in six innings of work.  She struck out three and walked four.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Psenicka had two hits and two runs scored to extend her hitting streak to 13 games, while McClounie reached base three times on two walks and a hit.  Buchanan also contributed two hits.

LEADING THE FLYERS

Cierra Taylor had two of LU's six hits.
