Baseball Sweeps Friday Doubleheader, Earns 20th Win

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The 18th-ranked Wayne State University baseball team (20-4 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) began the series at the back-to-back GLIAC champions Northwood (16-9 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) with a doubleheader on Friday. The Warriors scored four early runs and that would be more than Hunter Brown (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) (4-0) would need, collecting his second straight complete game shutout as WSU won 4-0.  WSU used a four run fourth inning to propel itself to a 7-2 victory in game two.

GAME ONE (W, 4-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

A walk and hit-by-pitch followed by a sacrifice bunt from Jacob Badalamenti (Clinton Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) put runners at second and third in the top of the second inning.  Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) gave WSU a 1-0 lead with an RBI single into right field on the ensuing at-bat.

A Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) solo home run to left center started the scoring in the top of third inning and Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) followed with an RBI triple.  Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) staked the Green & Gold to a 4-0 advantage with a sacrifice fly to left field.

A 6-4-3 double play helped Brown hang a zero in the bottom of the third inning.  Brown stayed in his groove and struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Brown continued to silence the NU bats and worked clean fifth, sixth and seventh innings to secure the victory.  A 5-3 double play in the seventh inning aided in Brown dancing around an error and two walks.

AT THE PLATE
Jacob Finkbeiner went 2-for-4, while four other Warriors recorded one hit.  MacLean and DeLanoy tallied extra-base-hits, while MacLean, DeLanoy, Kelly and Miller all notched RBI.

ON THE MOUND
Brown was sharp, blanking the T-Wolves over seven innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out seven batters.  He lowers his season ERA to 1.71 in the process.

GAME TWO (W, 7-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams were scoreless through the first two innings as Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) (4-0) was solid to open game two.  MacLean drew a one-out walk before Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) singled to right field to place runners at the corners.  An RBI bunt single from DeLanoy put WSU up 1-0 as MacLean scored.  A walk to Kelly loaded the bases and Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Cathedral) fouled out to left field but Jorah was able to tag up and score the frame's second tally.

Three walks and a WSU error led to a run for Northwood in the bottom of the third inning.  Miller led off the fourth inning with a home run to left field.  Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) singled and later scored on a passed ball before MacLean doubled home another run.  A groundout by DeLanoy gave the Warriors a 6-1 advantage.

The Timberwolves collected a lead off home run of their own in the fifth inning but WSU answered with a run on a Kelly single in the top of the seventh inning to put the final score at 7-2.

AT THE PLATE
MacLean finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.  Jorah, DeLanoy and Miller all posted two-hit games as the Warriors pounded out 13 total hits.

ON THE MOUND
Waldrop continued WSU's impressive pitching this season, working five innings, allowing one earned run and striking out eight batters.  Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) finished the contest with two innings of relief.  He did not allow a run on two hits to go with his three punch outs.

UP NEXT
The series continues between the Warriors and Timberwolves on Saturday with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
