Men's Tennis Blanks Michigan Tech, 7-0

The 22nd-ranked Warriors remain undefeated in the GLIAC.

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The 22nd-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis squad (16-3 overall, 6-0 GLIAC) blanked Michigan Tech (2-13 overall, 0-8 GLIAC), 7-0, at MTU's Senior Day this afternoon.

WSU's conference win in Husky territory clinched at least a share of the GLIAC regular-season title.  The Green and Gold can clinch the regular-season title outright with a victory at Lake Super State tomorrow.

DOUBLES RESULTS
Redshirt junior Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) and freshman David Solar (Prague, Czech Republic) were first off the courts after sweeping their No. 3 doubles match (6-0) against Juan Felipe Chica and Harry Becht.

Sophomore Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) and junior Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) were next to finish, notching a 6-1 victory over Nico Caviglia and Ignacio Carbajosa.

At No. 1 doubles, 24th-ranked senior partners Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) and Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) won their match 6-4 vs. Mario Neto and Siddhesh Mahadeshwar.

SINGLES RESULTS
Vane was first off the courts after nearly sweeping Carbajosa (6-0, 6-1).  Head coach Bryan Morrow commented, "Taylor volleyed and got up to the net aggressively.  He took care of business quick."

Renaudie was next off the courts at No. 2 singles.  His aggressive play, huge forehands, and ability to come up to the net led Renaudie to a victory over Caviglia (6-2, 6-1).

Mertz won his No. 4 singles match versus Mahadeshwar (6-3, 6-1).  "Griffin took care of business the way he always does," stated Morrow.

Hitting the ball hard at No. 1 singles, Karcz topped Neto (6-2, 6-1).

At No. 5 singles, freshman Maz Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) blanked Chica (6-0, 6-0).  Morrow commented, "Max hitting aces was pretty incredible.  There was a lot of talk about how big he serves the ball."

At No. 6 singles, Sammons was down 5-4 in the second set and made a comeback to win 7-5 over Becht (6-1, 7-5).

FROM COACH MORROW
"At doubles, the Huskies played very competitively.  In singles, we pretty much took care of business.  Everybody played hard and everybody looked good.  I am proud of the guys.  They are hungry and we are excited to travel to Lake State tomorrow."
