Softball Drops Pair at Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Wayne State University softball team (26-17 overall, 9-13 GLIAC) lost a pair of GLIAC games, 6-2 and 4-2, at Northwood University (23-18-1 overall, 13-9 GLIAC) Friday afternoon giving the Warriors a season-long four-game losing streak.  This was WSU's first time being swept in Midland since 2013.

GAME ONE RECAP

The host Timberwolves scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the first on three hits and a two-out miscue by Wayne State.

The Warriors pulled within a run in the top of the third as senior infielder Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) had a two-out double to right center and scored when sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) singled through the right side.  Kressler then stole second and advanced to third on the throwing error.  Junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) had an RBI single to right to cut the deficit to one at 3-2.

NU extended its lead in the bottom of the frame as a walk, and a double, preceded a two-out two-run home run by Karli Godlewski.

Ten of WSU's next 12 batters were retired until pinch-hitter Jamie MacNeil (Brampton, Ont.) singled in the seventh.

IN THE CIRCLE

Senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) suffered the loss to fall to 15-10 after allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits in six innings.  She struck out one and walked three.

Taylor Wright (6-1) limited WSU to two runs (one earned) on seven hits in seven innings.  She struck out one and walked three.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had two hits, including a double, while McClounie had a double and a walk.

LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES

Godlewski went 2-for-2 with three RBI, while Julia Gross had two hits.

GAME TWO RECAP

The nightcap began as pitchers duel until the Warriors scored twice in the top of the fourth.

Senior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) had a one-out double and pinch-runner Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) went to third on a ground out.
Guitar launched her second home run of the season over the center field fence to make it 2-0.

NU responded with one run on a double, and a sac bunt with the runner scoring from third on a fielding error by WSU.

After Wayne State was unable to score in the top of the fifth despite having the bases loaded with one out, the Timberwolves scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the inning.

With a runner at second and two outs, a walk was followed by back-to-back doubles to produce the three runs.

IN THE CIRCLE

Freshman Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) allowed four earned runs on just four hits in six innings.  Ameel (9-7) struck out one and walked four.

Shayna Frank (7-7) held the Warriors to two earned runs on six hits in seven innings.  She struck out two and walked four.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Six different WSU batters had one hit apiece.

LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES
