Softball Splits at Davenport

WSU falls 3-2 in the opener, but wins game two 13-5.

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The 17th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (21-8 overall, 4-4 GLIAC) split a conference doubleheader at Davenport University (13-12 overall, 5-3 GLIAC) Tuesday afternoon.  WSU was edged 3-2 in the opener, before bouncing back to record a 13-5 triumph in five innings in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead as Gabby Palazzolo homered leading off the bottom of the first.

The Warriors tied the game in the fourth as junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) reached on an error and advanced to second on a single by senior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.).  Junior outfielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) had a one-out single to load the bases.  Sophomore shortstop Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) had an RBI single to knot the game at 1-1.

DU regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs with back-to-back one-out singles followed by a Wayne State miscue to load the bases.  Palazzolo had the tie-breaking single, while the third run for Davenport scored another WSU error.

The Warriors had a glorious opportunity to tie the game in the sixth as Messina had a leadoff single, and junior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) followed with a double just off the glove of a diving center fielder.  Clayton reached on an error with Messina scoring to make it 3-2.  Following a Panther error, a 4-2-5 double play ended the threat.

Senior third baseman Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) led off the third with her team-leading fourth home run of the campaign.  Sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) followed with a single.  After back-to-back fielder's choices along with a throwing error, Guitar reached on another DU miscue to load the bases.  With two outs, Myers had an RBI infield single to make it 4-0 and Daly followed with a two-run single.

Davenport's Abby Merice had a three-run double after a sacrifice fly, then scored on a single by Rachel Griffin to cut the WSU lead to 6-5.
