Baseball Sweeps Parkside as Kelly Matches Home Run Record

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The 14th-ranked Wayne State University baseball program (29-9 overall, 13-6 GLIAC) had its sights set on another series victory on Saturday at Parkside (7-27 overall, 3-17 GLIAC) and that's just what the Warriors did by taking both ends of the doubleheader by scores of 6-2 in nine innings and 7-3 in seven innings.

GAME ONE (W, 6-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) singled through the right side to start the top of the third inning before Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) reached on an error and Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) loaded the bases with another single.  Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) drove in the game's first run and another run scored on a Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) groundout.

Three Parkside hits produced a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Rangers tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The first two runners reached in the bottom of the seventh inning but Kelly picked the runner off second base to slow the rally.  UWP loaded the bases before Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) (4-2) was able to end the frame with a strikeout and force extra innings.

Foley sent a one-out single into right field before Finkbeiner drew a walk to apply pressure in the top of the ninth inning.  Two runs scored on a single from DeLanoy and Jorah gave WSU a 5-2 lead with an RBI single of his own.  Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) extended the margin to 6-2 with an RBI double into right center.

Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth to secure the victory.

AT THE PLATE
Ramirez finished 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Foley, DeLanoy and Jorah all posted two-hit games.

ON THE MOUND
Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) started and allowed two earned run in five and a 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts.  Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) did not record an out before Hovde struck out three batters over two and 2/3 innings and did not allow a run.  Schmidt tossed the finale frame.

GAME TWO (W, 7-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Foley led off game two with a walk in the top of the first inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Finkbeiner singled through the right side.  A sac fly by DeLanoy gave WSU a 1-0 lead.  Kelly doubled home a run to make it 2-0.

Kelly continued to swing a hot bat and homered to lead off the top of the third inning to stretch the visitor's lead to 3-0.  The Rangers scored three times on three hits in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 3-3.

WSU regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI double from Finkbeiner.  Kelly hit his second home run of the game, a two-run shot, to push the advantage to 6-3 and match the program record held by WSU Hall of Famer Jon Weisman (36 / 2003-07).

A 6-4-3 double play helped WSU keep Parkside quiet in the fifth inning and Ramirez added a run with a sac fly in the top of the seventh inning.

AT THE PLATE
Kelly finished 4-for-4 with four RBI, two home runs and three runs scored.  Foley went 3-for-3, while Finkbeiner and Jorah both tallied two hits each.

ON THE MOUND
Max Moon (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Gabriel Richard) started and allowed three earned runs in two and 2/3 innings.  Brendan Wetmore (Westland, Mich. / John Glenn) (2-1) did now allow a run in three innings and struck out four batters.  Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) earned his first save of the season by working the final inning and a 1/3, while not allowing a hit.
