Softball Season Ends With 2-0 Loss To Southern Indiana

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (34-25 overall) had its 2019 season come to an end with a 2-0 setback to the University of Southern Indiana (35-20 overall) in an NCAA Tournament elimination game Friday afternoon at the GVSU Softball Field.

GAME RECAP
The Screaming Eagles scored once in the bottom of the first as Alicia Webb doubled to left center with two outs and scored on a double to left field on a 3-2 offering by Caitlyn Bradley.

USI scored its final run in the third as Courtney Schoolcraft had a leadoff single, before WSU senior pitcher Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) walked the next two batters.  Freshman Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) entered the circle and induced a ground ball to short, but the throw home bounced and allowing the second run to score.  After a foul out, Ameel induced a 5-2-3 ground ball double play.

Wayne State was limited to two hits and three walks in the contest.

The best chances for the Warriors to score were in the top of the first when sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) led off the game with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch, but the next three batters were retired.

After USI hurler Jennifer Leonhardt retired 10 in a row, sophomore shortstop Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) walked on a 3-2 pitch but the next two hitters made outs.

Redshirt freshman outfielder Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) had a two-out single in the fifth to break up the no-hitter.

In the top of the seventh, senior catcher Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) had an infield single with one out.

IN THE CIRCLE

Guitar (21-15) suffered the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in two innings.  She struck out one and walked two.

Ameel pitched four scoreless innings allowing just one hit with one strikeout to one walk.

Leonhardt scattered two hits and recorded nine strikeouts to two walks.

Messina and Dodge accounted for the two WSU hits.
