Baseball Battles But Bows Out of GLIAC Tournament

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- The 23rd-ranked and second-seeded Wayne State University baseball team (34-15 overall) was eliminated from the 2019 GLIAC Tournament after dropping Saturday's contest, 10-7, against top-seeded and 11th-ranked Ashland (39-11 overall).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) continued his solid postseason with a leadoff single to begin the top of the first inning and Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) followed with a single through the left side.  A walk to Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) loaded the bases with one out and Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) gave WSU a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Eagles were quick to answer, taking a 4-1 lead with four runs on four hits and two walks in the bottom of the first inning.  AU added its fifth run of the day in the bottom of the second inning on a fielder's choice RBI.

Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) started the top of the third inning with a single to right center, advanced to second on a wild pitch and took third base on an error.  DeLanoy singled to the right side for an RBI and another error allowed WSU to pull within 5-3.

Once again Ashland had an answer and scored three runs and two hits to extend its lead to 8-3, while being aided by two passed balls.  The Eagles looked poised to tack on more but a diving play from Miller in the hole behind first base ended the threat in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Matt Krutsch (Essex, Ont.) entered from the bullpen and used a 6-4-3 double play to keep AU off the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning.

After walks to Miller and Jacob Badalamenti (Clinton Twp., Mich. / De La Salle), a three-run home run from Jorah to left field cut the home advantage to 8-6.  The offense continued to dictate the game Ashland scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 10-6 lead.  Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) and Kelly drew walks to begin the top of the seventh inning and WSU plated a run with an RBI groundout from Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.).

The Green & Gold put two runners on with one out in the top of the eighth inning but were unable to create any more offense.

Kelly legged out an infield single to start the top of the ninth inning and DeLanoy drew a walk.  However, the next three batters were retired as AU secured the three-run victory.

AT THE PLATE
Jorah was the engine driving the offense, going 4-for-4 with three RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored.  Foley finished 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored.  DeLanoy drove two runs to go with his 1-for-3 day.

ON THE MOUND
Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) (1-3) was touched for six runs on seven hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts.  Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) allowed two unearned runs in and two and 1/3 innings.  Krutsch allowed two runs (one earned) in his three and 2/3 innings of relief.

UP NEXT
