Women's Tennis Falls in Second Round of NCAA Regional

The second-seeded Warriors were upset 4-1 by No. 3-GVSU.

DETROIT -- The second-seeded Wayne State University women's tennis squad (21-6 overall) was upended 4-1 by third-seeded Grand Valley State (23-4 overall) in the second match of the 2019 NCAA Midwest Regional on Tuesday afternoon at the WSU tennis courts.

DOUBLES RESULTS
Senior Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont.) and sophomore Stephanie Stamate (Windsor, Ont.) fell 6-3 at No. 3 doubles vs. Nicole Heiniger and Livia Christman.

Freshman Laura Cazacu (London, England) and sophomore Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) dropped their No. 2 doubles match 6-4 vs. Marily Canellopoulos and Vera Griva.

Originally down by four, senior Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) and sophomore Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont.) closed the gap to tie Marija Leko and Madison Ballard 5-5 in an unfinished match.

SINGLES RESULTS
Da-Silva was first off the courts after earning a victory over Canellopoulos at No. 4 singles (6-1, 6-3).

Freshman Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) was next to finish, losing her No. 6 singles match to Heiniger (6-3, 6-1).

Sophomore Tanja Skalda (Prien Am Chiemsee, Germany) lost her No. 5 singles match to Christman (6-2, 6-2).

After falling in a first-set tiebreaker, Liong dropped her No. 3 singles match to Leko (7-6(6), 6-4).

Kuznetsova (No. 1 singles) and Cazacu (No. 2 singles) both went unfinished when GVSU clinched the match.  Kuznetsova was down 3-0 in her third set against Griva after winning the first 6-4 and losing the second 6-4.  Cazacu was also in a third set, winning 1-0 after splitting the first two sets (6-3, 4-6).
