Justin Kelly Sets Home Run Mark as Baseball Wins Twice

DETROIT -- The 22nd-ranked Wayne State University baseball program (33-12 overall, 17-9 GLIAC) and Saginaw Valley State (17-27-1 overall, 10-16-1 GLIAC) met for two games on Saturday at Harwell Field and the Warriors swept the doubleheader by scores of 13-9 and 5-0.

Ashland wrapped up the regular season title and top seed in next week's GLIAC Tournament with two wins on Saturday.  WSU will be the two-seed when the playoffs begin on Thursday in Traverse City, Mich.

GAME ONE (W, 13-9)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Four runs scored on two hits and an error in the top of the second inning to give SVSU a 4-0 advantage.  Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) belted his 37th career home run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the visitor's lead in half, 4-2.  With the blast, Kelly passes WSU Hall of Famer Jon Weisman (2003-07) to become the new home run leader.

The Green & Gold erupted for 11 runs on eight hits and three errors in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 4-4.    A Kelly two-run double and a two-run single from Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) gave the home team an 8-4 lead.  A Cardinals' error allowed another run to score before Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) singled home WSU's 10th run of the day.  Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) singled to left to bring home another run and Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) grounded out to third base but a run scored to make it 12-4.  Foley plated the final run of the inning with an RBI single to left field.

SVSU scored three runs on a hit and five walks in the top of the fifth inning to trim deficit to 13-7.  Two more runs scored for the Cards in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 13-9.

AT THE PLATE
Miller finished 4-for-4 two runs scored and an RBI, while Kelly went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs.  Finkbeiner, DeLanoy and Ramirez all posted two-hit games.

ON THE MOUND
Matt Krutsch (Essex, Ont.) started and pitched two innings, allowing four earned runs on two hits and four walks to go with two strikeouts.  Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) (4-1) came in from the bullpen to work two innings and allowed an earned run on two hits but struck out four batters.  Nick Cowen (Tecumseh, Mich.) did not record an out before Dustin Renfroe (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Brother Rice / U of D Jesuit) allowed two earned runs on three hits and three walks in his two innings of work.  Brendan Wetmore (Westland, Mich. / John Glenn) earned his third save of the season by working the final inning without allowing a run.

GAME TWO (W, 5-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams were scoreless through the first three innings before the Warriors scored five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth inning.

DeLanoy tripled to left center field to start the frame and Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) doubled home a run to break the tie.  Ramirez traded places with Schmidt with a double off the wall in left and Miller singled home WSU's third run with a single down the right field line.  Finkbeiner ended the scoring with a two-run double to left center.

Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) (5-2) kept SVSU quiet over the final three innings to secure his first shutout of the season and his third complete game.

AT THE PLATE
DeLanoy went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Miller finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.

ON THE MOUND
