Softball Blanked 4-0 In NCAA Tournament Opening Round

Warriors to face Hillsdale Friday in an elimination contest.

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Wayne State University softball team (33-24 overall) began NCAA Tournament play with a 4-0 loss to the University of Southern Indiana (39-14).  WSU is the fifth seed in the Midwest, while USI is the fourth seed.

Warrior senior hurler Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) was locked in a pitcher's duel with Screaming Eagles thrower Jennifer Leonhardt through five innings as Guitar allowed just three singles and Leonhardt surrendered just two singles.

In the top of the sixth, sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) singled to center field with one out, but the next two batters were retired.

In the bottom of the frame, Southern Indiana sent nine hitters to the dish scoring four times on five hits.  After a leadoff single by Claire Johnson, Leonhardt reached on a sacrifice bunt as the throw to second was a just late.  Alicia Webb followed with RBI double to the fence in left, before Caitlyn Bradley had an RBI single to left.  After a pop out, Haley Shouse had two-run double down the left field line.

UP NEXT

Wayne State will play Hillsdale College in an elimination contest at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.  The Warriors and the Chargers have met 101 times over the last 38 years, mostly as GLIAC rivals either during regular-season conference play or in the league tournament, but never in the NCAA Tournament.  The squads did meet earlier this year down in Florida with WSU prevailing 4-3 in eight innings.
