Baseball Inks Nine Newcomers for 2020

DETROIT -- Head coach Ryan Kelley and the Wayne State University baseball program has added nine student-athletes to join the Warriors for the 2020 season.  Those future Warriors are Jeremy Bouford (Troy, Mich. / Athens), Kyle Domzalski (Huntington Woods, Mich. / Berkley), Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport), Nick O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central), Preston Pilat (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice), Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.), Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower), Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) and Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.).

"This will mark a special year with Wayne State Baseball as we will initiate our 80th season in program history," said head coach Ryan Kelley.  "We believe this is a special class to compliment a signature anniversary year.  Our returning baseball student-athletes are hungry to continue off last year's academic and athletic accomplishments while we are excited for this new class to aid in our program's advancement.  While comprising this dynamic class, I would like to recognize the efforts of our recruiting coordinator Aaron Hepner along with the leadership of our entire coaching and support staff."

Jeremy Bouford
Troy, Mich. / Athens
RHP / 6-3 / 190
High School:
  A 2019 graduate of Troy Athens High School ... was a two-year Varsity letterwinner for the  Redhawks and head coach Mike Morris ... went 4-2 with 42 strikeouts over 34 and 2/3 innings as a senior ... helped Troy Athens finish fourth in the league ... was an All-Conference and All-District honoree ... lists an eight-inning and 13-strikeout performance vs. Bloomfield Hills as his top individual performance ... earned Scholar-Athlete accolades with a 3.75 GPA ... played summer baseball with the South Oakland A's and head coach Scott Suminski ... the A's finished 17-10 and he struck out 37 batters over 23 innings and won four games ... also lettered in football.

Coach Kelley's Thoughts:  ""Jeremy has outstanding pitching potential and we are excited about his forward progression.  His academic goals with actuarial science are exciting to compliment his desire to achieve a great future on the pitching mound. I have been very impressed with his work ethic leading into his freshmen campaign.  A special thanks to his prior coaching staff with Troy Athens High School and the South Oakland A's."

Kyle Domzalski
Huntington Woods, Mich. / Berkley

  A 2019 graduate of Berkley High School ... was a four-year letterwinner and team captain for the Bears and Head Coach Matthew Rawlik ... helped the Bears go 21-7 this past season, win a OAA Blue league title ... was named league MVP ... a three-time All-League honoree and was an All-District selection ... lists a two home run game as his top individual performance ... also lettered in football and hockey ... played summer baseball with the Oakland Bulldogs and head coach Chuck Vanrobays ... graduated with a 3.8 GPA.

Coach Kelley's Thoughts:  ""We are excited about Kyle's competitiveness and ability to play multiple positions.  Plus, his drive to succeed with our College of Engineering will be exciting to witness.  He had a tremendous scholastic and leadership career at Berkley High School and we are thankful he will be a Warrior."

Karter Fitzpatrick
Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport
RHP/INF / 6-5 / 200
High School:
  A 2019 graduate of Carleton Airport High School ... represented the Jets at the 2019 MSHBCA (Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association) East-West All-Star game played at Comerica Park and was selected as the East squad's MVP was a two-year letterwinner and team captain for the Jets and head coach John Vanwasshenova ... helped lead his team to a 32-2 record, including district and league titles ... as a senior, he went 11-1 as a starting pitcher with a 0/36 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 72 innings ... hit .426 ... tossed a no-hitter vs. John Glenn and a one-hit shutout against Bedford ... two-time All-League and two-time All-Region selection ... was a Second Team All-State honoree ... played travel baseball with the Blissfield American Legion Post 325 and head coach Larry Tuttle ... also lettered in soccer, basketball and football ... carried a 4.2 GPA throughout high school.

Coach Kelley's Thoughts:  "Karter comes to WSU after earning athletic success at Carleton Airport HS.  We were thrilled to see his MVP honors at the annual Michigan High School All-Star game at Comerica Park this summer.  He has dynamic athletic ability to grow into a special NCAA student-athlete.  Plus, his passion as an aspiring engineer will compliment his collegiate experience."

Nick O'Dea
Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central
RHP / 6-0 / 180

2019 (Kalamazoo Valley CC):  Pitched in 13 games and went 6-3 in 10 starts ... finished with a 4.66 ERA and struck out 46 batters in 58 innings ... tallied five complete games.

2018 (Kalamazoo Valley CC):  Appeared in nine games ... finished 2-0 with a 7.71 ERA ... collected 23 strikeouts in 18 and 2/3 innings ... had one complete game.

High School:  A 2017 graduate of Detroit Catholic Central High School ... was a two-year letterwinner for the Shamrocks ... helped DCC win a district title in 2016.

Coach Kelley's Thoughts:  "Nick comes to WSU after a competitive stretch at KVCC under the direction of Coach Cody Piechocki.  Nick's enthusiasm to join the Detroit community and WSU is exciting.  We look forward with him to be a great addition to our pitching staff and the Mike Ilitch School of Business as a Finance major."

Preston Pilat
Rochester Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice (Northern Kentucky)
OF / 6-4 / 210

2019 (Northern Kentucky):  Played in 31 games and made 24 starts ... hit .245 with five doubles, five home runs and 10 RBI ... drew 17 walks and scored 17 runs ... finished with a .449 slugging and a .356 on-base percentage ... stole two bases ... did not make an error in 62 chances and had one outfield assist.

2018 (Northern Kentucky):  Started in 23 of the 34 games that he played in during the season … recorded 16 hits, 11 runs, six RBIs, two doubles and a home run … had five multi-hit games on the year.

2017 (Northern Kentucky): Made 10 starts in the 19 games that he appeared in during the season… had six hits, six runs, three doubles and six RBI on the year …  recorded 22 putouts in his freshman season.

High School:  A 2017 graduate of Brother Rice High School ... posted a .395 batting average with 33 RBI as a junior ... the outfielder recorded 18 doubles, seven triples and four home runs while stealing 25 bases on the season ... received All-League honors and All-County honorable mention recognition at the conclusion of the 2015 season ... as a senior, posted a .400 average with 35 runs scored and 51 RBI ... slugged 17 doubles, seven triples and four home runs ... posted 20 stolen bases as a senior.

Kyle Ray
Woodhaven, Mich. / Woodhaven

High School:
  A 2019 graduate of Woodhaven High School ... was a four-year letterwinner and a team captain for head coach Corey Farner ... selected to the 2019 All-News-Herald Dream Team as well as Second Team Division 1 All-State ... helped the Warriors go 35-4 and reach the state quarterfinals ... Woodhaven won its league for the fifth consecutive season and were district champions for the second straight year ... also won the regional title for the second year in a row ... batted .416 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 36 RBI ... scored 47 runs and had 29 walks to seven strikeouts ... compiled a 3-0 mark as a senior with a 0.76 ERA in 18.1 innings ... played summer baseball for the Lincoln Park Rails.

Coach Kelley's Thoughts:  ""Kyle comes to WSU from an accomplished high school baseball program at Woodhaven under the respected leadership of Coach Corey Farner.  Kyle's individual and team success via Woodhaven and the Lincoln Park Rails programs will add to the incoming class and overall team dynamic.  His enthusiastic personality and team first approach will be a great addition on and off the field."

Jacob Raymond
Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower (Oakland)

2019 (Oakland):  Pitched in nine games and struck out nine batters over eight and a 1/3 innings ... finished with a 21.60 ERA.

2018 (Oakland):  Appeared in eight games and made four starts on the mound ... went 0-4 with a 9.64 ERA ... struck out 15 batters in 18 and 2/3 innings ... opponents hit .250 against the right-hander ... also made one appearance at the plate (0-for-1).

High School:  A 2017 graduate from Utica Eisenhower High School ... was a two-year Varsity letterwinner and team captain for the Eagles for coaches Jason Gendreau and Dave Fox ... was an All-State selection and Dream Team member in 2017 ... played in the 2017 MHSBCA All-Star Game at Comerica Park ... was named to the All-State Second Team in 2016 ... earned All-Conference, All-District and All-Region accolades in 2016 ... is Utica Eisenhower's all-time leader in hits and set the school record for hits in a season ... helped the Eagles to a 20-8 record in 2017 and a 27-12 mark in 2016 ... played summer baseball for Little Caesars.

Coach Kelley's Thoughts:  ""Jacob has athletic tools that will add competiveness as a position player and pitcher with our team.  He is a professional young man that will compliment our team philosophies.  He will be a solid student addition to our Department of Communication on campus and we are excited to have another member from the Little Caesars Baseball program join WSU."

Kaden Stively
Washington, Mich. / Romeo

High School:
  A 2019 graduate from Romeo High School ... was a three-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs and head coach Tim Delamielleure ... compiled a 9-0 record in 2019 with a 0.10 ERA, along with 75 strikeouts in 73.1 innings ... selected to the Macomb Daily Division 1 All-County First Team after receiving MAC Red Division MVP honors as a senior ... allowed just 47 hits in 2019 and 11 runs (one earned) ... struck out 60 batters in 53 and 2/3 innings as a junior, while posting a 1.79 ERA ... finished with 35 Ks in 42 innings and a 2.50 ERA as a sophomore ... helped RHS to a 25-6 record and a first-place Macomb Area Conference (MAC) finish in 2018 ... the Bulldogs went 17-15 and finished third in the MAC ... was a First Team All-District and First Team All-MAC honoree in 2018 ... earned an All-Academic award as a sophomore and a junior ... collected team's Cy Young award in 2017 and 2018 ... competes for the Detroit Metro Stars and head coach Joe D'Orazio during the summer ... went 8-1 with 48 strikeouts and a 1.50 ERA with the Metro Stars ... competed in the 2019 MHSBCA All-Star Game at Comerica Park.

Kaden comes to WSU after producing a dynamic career at Romeo HS with Coach TJ Delamielleure.  He has proven to win as a left handed pitcher at each level in route to this point.  Kaden still has much potential and we look forward to witnessing his NCAA transition.  Plus, his experience with the Metro Detroit Stars will aid in his future success on the mound."

Ryne Travis
Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp. (Olney Central College)

2019 (Olney Central): 
Played in 41 games ... hit .356 with seven doubles and 25 RBI ... scored 31 runs and stole four bases ... drew 18 walks ... posted a .957 fielding percentage on 140 total chances.

2018 (Olney Central):  Played in 23 games ... hit .302 with four doubles and a triple ... drove in 17 runs and scored 16 .... stole two bases and drew 12 walks ... finished with a .993 fielding percentage on 140 total chances ... caught five runners trying to steal.

High School:  A 2017 graduate of Lockport Township High School ... was a three-year letterwinner for the Porters and head coach Andy Statunas ... also lettered in football.

Coach Kelley's Thoughts:  "Ryne will add competitive balance at the catching position and with our offense.  His prior experiences at Olney Central and Lockport Township HS from Illinois will add leadership value to our team.  We are excited about his introduction to Wayne State University on the field and within the Mike Ilitch School of Business marketing program."
