Football Posts 33-7 Road Victory At Quincy

Defense limits Hawks to 115 yards.

QUINCY, Ill. – The Wayne State University football team (1-2 overall) concluded the non-conference portion of its 2019 schedule with a convincing 33-7 road victory at Quincy University (2-1 overall) Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After not scoring a point in the opening stanza during its first two games, WSU took an early 3-0 lead as freshman Niccolo Seilo (Royal Oak, Mich. / U. of Detroit Jesuit) connected on his first collegiate field goal attempt, a 35-yarder just over three minutes into the contest.  Seilo's three-pointer concluded an eight-play, 56-yard drive.

Following a Hawk punt, the Warriors drove 78 yards in six plays with senior James Hill (Livonia, Mich. / Clarenceville) scoring a rushing touchdown for the eighth consecutive game as he scored on a two-yard scamper.

On Quincy's ensuing possession, Wayne State blocked the QU punt with sophomore Spencer Stephenson (Midland, Mich. / Dow) finally falling on the ball at the Hawk 12, after both Niko Mosley (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Ray'Jon Williams-Jackson (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ypsilanti Community) had the ball and fumbled.

Graduate student Deiontae Nicholas (Chesterfield, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) took a jet sweep 12 yards for his first rushing touchdown since September 16, 2017 (against Saginaw Valley State) on the very next play.

Four Wayne State penalties extended a Quincy drive that concluded with a Jalen Griffin eight-yard touchdown run, which made the score 17-7 in WSU's favor.

Following the kickoff, the Warriors drove 75 yards in 11 plays with sophomore Steven Glenn (Lincoln Park, Mich.) hauling in a 12-yard scoring strike from senior Dakota Kupp (Waterford, Mich. / Mott).

The next three drives ended in punts, before WSU had a 10-play, 53-yard drive culminating in a two-yard keeper around left end by Kupp.

Wayne State had 302 yards (156 rushing, 146 passing) of total offense in the first 30 minutes compared to 68 yards (18 rushing, 50 passing) for Quincy.

The lone score of the second half was a safety by the Warrior defense as senior defensive end Jalen Lewis (Pontiac, Mich. / West Bloomfield) tackled QU signal caller Andrew Rund in the end zone.
