Men's Tennis Edges Lewis, 4-3

WSU recorded its fourth-consecutive win.

PLAINFIELD, Ill. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (4-0 overall) earned a 4-3 victory at Lewis (0-4 overall) on Friday afternoon for its fourth-straight win of the season.

DOUBLES RESULTS
At the third flight, sophomore Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) and freshman Ryan Okonski (Stevensville, Mich. / St. Joseph) recorded the lone WSU doubles victory for the Green and Gold.  The duo nearly blanked Jonathan Maghirang and Jeremy Charles, 6-1.

Senior Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) and freshman Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) fell 6-3 to Oskar Lusti and Pedja Trifunovic at No. 2 doubles.

Freshman Dom Spicer (London, England) and sophomore David Solar (Prague, Czech Republic) were last off the courts after dropping their No. 1 doubles match 6-3 against David Ambrozic and Juan Martin Ramirez Meija.

"Lewis took it to us in doubles," commented head coach Bryan Morrow.  "We had to move our players around today in both singles and doubles since we did not have Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) or Donovan Nguyen (Utica, Mich. / Troy).  Max and Ryan played great at the third flight and did exactly what we needed.  Unfortunately we were a little flat and Lewis outplayed us."

SINGLES RESULTS
Solar was first to finish after nearly sweeping Maghirang 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.

"David played a lefty who had a difficult serve to handle," commented Morrow, "but he made a lot of balls and served well.  David really stepped up big for us."

At No. 4 singles, Laws battled in a close first set versus Trifunovic to win 6-4, 6-2.

"Luke started well and got an early break," said Morrow.  "He played a sloppy game and lost his lead in the first set.  Lewis was on serve for a little while before Luke got the next break at 4-4.  He played two great games to win the first set.  Luke started to look more comfortable in the second set and played really well."

After winning 7-6 (7-2) in a first-set tiebreaker, Renaudie almost blanked Meija (6-1) in the second set of their No. 1 singles match.

"Pierre did okay in the first set," recalled Morrow.  "He pulled out a hard-fought victory in the first set and won the tiebreaker fairly easy, before dominating in the second set."

In Okonski's first singles match of the regular season, the freshman secured the Warrior win after a 6-1, 6-0 victory vs. Earl Lim at No. 6 singles.

"Ryan hadn't played a match like this yet," stated Morrow.  "He had to step in and get a win for us.  Ryan did not show a lot of nerves and I couldn't be happier with his results.  He made very few unforced errors and played a solid match."

At No. 2 singles, Rink fell in a third set to Lusti (3-6, 6-3, 6-4).

"Max played great in the first set," Morrow remarked.  "A point here-and-there made a difference in the second set, and then same thing in the third.  Max was not able to break back in the third set, but he had a few good looks at it."

Spicer was edged 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) in a second-set tiebreaker by Ambrozic at No. 3 singles.

"Dom played a solid, difficult opponent," stated Morrow.  "He was not able to pull out a pretty close match."

WARRIOR STRONG
Renaudie received the Match Ball after being voted Player of the Game.  Today was the first time this season that Renaudie played in the top singles spot.

"Pierre played the best that he's looked all year in his No. 1 singles match," stated Morrow.
