Softball Splits On Season-Opening Day

Warriors blank Hillsdale, but edged by Lindenwood.

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (1-1) overall) began its 2020 campaign Friday evening at the Lewis University Invitational being held at the Dome at the Ballpark.

In the opener, WSU blanked Hillsdale (1-5 overall) 7-0 behind a two-hit shutout by sophomore Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.).  Four defensive errors in the third inning led to seven unearned runs as Lindenwood (4-2 overall) upended the Warriors 7-5 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP

WSU struck for an unearned run in the bottom of the first as freshman Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) led off with a five-pitch walk.  A sacrifice bunt by junior Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) advanced Nadolny to second.  She moved to third on a ground out and scored on a Charger fielding error.

Ameel allowed a leadoff single in the second, but that runner was later cut down at the plate on a squeeze bunt.

Redshirt sophomore Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) had a four-pitch walk to start the second.  Junior Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) had a single to right center.  Following a sacrifice bunt by senior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.), senior Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) blooped a two-run single into center field to make it 3-0.  Nadolny singled and took second on the throw.

Psenicka walked to load the bases, and junior Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) laced a two-run ground-rule double to left center.  The Chargers then made a pitching change going to Dana Weidinger.  After a pop out, a walk to redshirt sophomore Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) re-loaded the bases.  Dodge had a two-run single to center to increase WSU's advantage to 7-0.

IN THE CIRCLE

Ameel (1-0) struck out six and walked three, while allowing two hits to earn the victory.

Natalie Walters (0-2) started for Hillsdale and allowed seven runs (six earned) in 1.1 innings.  She struck out one, walked three and allowed four hits.  Weidinger hurled 4.2 scoreless innings, surrendering two hits.  She struck out two and walked three.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Six different WSU batters had one hit apiece, with Kressler, Dodge and Clayton each driving in two.

Psenicka walked in her final three plate appearances, becoming the first WSU batter to walk three times in a game since Kristen Lucas vs. Saginaw Valley State in the 2015 GLIAC Tournament.

LEADING THE CHARGERS

Jenna Cantalupo and Renee Bielawa each had one hit.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Warriors snapped a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the second.  Senior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) had a leadoff single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dodge.  Myers laced an RBI single through the right side plating Turkalj.

The Lions sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the third scoring seven unearned runs on five hits (four doubles) and four Warrior miscues.

Wayne State tried to rally in the fifth scoring three times to cut the deficit in half.  Claydon had a one-out single and Nadolny followed with a double to center field.  An infield single by Psenicka loaded the bases, and an RBI groundout by Kressler scored Claydon.  Turkalj and Dodge each had RBI singles.

The Warriors had a chance to score in the sixth as Clayton had a one-out double, but Claydon's bomb went off the roof resulting in an out.

WSU pulled within two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Kressler smacked a one-out home run.

IN THE CIRCLE

Nadolny (0-1) started for WSU and surrendered seven unearned runs in three innings.  She allowed six hits and struck out three, with zero walks.  Claydon came on in relief and pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Nadolny, Turkalj, Myers and Claydon each had two hits.

LEADING THE LIONS
