Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader vs. Kentucky Wesleyan

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (3-2 overall) continued its four-game series against Kentucky Wesleyan (2-4 overall) on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors won game one 12-4 powered by a four-run third inning and a six-run fourth inning.  The Panthers took game two 6-3 as KWC scored four runs in the final two innings come back and win.  The series is being played at Shipyard Park in South Carolina.

GAME ONE (W, 12-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams were quiet until the Warriors used five hits and a walk in the bottom of the third inning to plate four runs.  Sophomore Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) drove in the game's first tally before redshirt sophomore Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) made it a 3-0 game with a two-run double into left field.  Sophomore Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) added a run with an RBI double to left center.

Redshirt sophomore Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) extended WSU's lead to 5-0 with an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth inning.  RBI from Tanderys, Ramirez, sophomore Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) and junior Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) pushed the advantage to 10-0.

Kentucky Wesleyan scored four runs  on five hits in the top of the fifth inning, including a two-run home run to finish the scoring.

A sacrifice fly from Travis plus a bases-loaded walk to DeLanoy finished the scoring and gave the Green & Gold a 12-4 lead.

AT THE PLATE
DeLanoy went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Ramirez also posted a 3-for-3 performance with two RBI.  Redshirt sophomore Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline), Tanderys and Miller all finished with two hits, while Tanderys drove in a game-high three runs.

ON THE MOUND
Senior Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) (2-0) worked five innings and allowed four earned runs with four strikeouts.  Freshman Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) collected the final six outs, while not allowing a base hit or a run.

GAME TWO (L, 3-6)
HOW IT HAPPENED
DeLanoy sent a solo home run over the wall in right field to give Wayne State a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  The Panthers tied the game at 1-1 with the assistance of a WSU passed ball.  DeLanoy drove in another run to break the 1-1 tie in the top of the third inning before junior Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) gave WSU a 3-1 lead as he scored on a passed ball.

An infield single allowed a run to score for KWC in the bottom of the third inning as the Panthers pulled with one,, 3-2.  The momentum stayed with Kentucky Wesleyan and two runs pushed KWC ahead 4-3.  The Panthers added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

AT THE PLATE
DeLanoy finished his solid day by going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

ON THE MOUND
Junior Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) (1-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing four earned runs across four innings and striking out five batters.  Senior Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) allowed two runs in the two innings of relief.

UP NEXT
The Warriors and Panthers will conclude their series on Sunday.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.
