Men's Tennis Wins 6-1 at Findlay

The Warriors swept the doubles competition.

FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (2-0 overall) notched a 6-1 victory at Findlay (1-5 overall) on Sunday afternoon.

DOUBLES RESULTS
Junior co-captain Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) and freshman Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) were first off the courts after a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles against Jorge Barnuevo and Alfredo Berlanga.

"Niklas and Luke started early and fast," commented head coach Bryan Morrow.  "There is never much doubt there.  They held serves easily and pretty much dominated."

At No. 3 doubles, senior co-captain Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) and sophomore Donovan Nguyen (Troy, Mich. / Utica) secured the WSU doubles point after tallying a 6-4 win versus Ivaylo Slavov and Andrew Codita.

"Pierre and Donovan got an early break and held on to win the match," stated Morrow.  "It was nerveracking; Findlay was good."

Freshman Dom Spicer (London, England) and sophomore David Solar (Prague, Czech Republic) were last off the courts after winning their tiebreaker (7-6 (7-2)) vs. Soh Kuyama and Mark Ivanov at the second flight.

"No. 2 doubles started fast and got an early break," Morrow recalled, "but then their opponents got the break and they were down.  Dom and David broke back and held their serves to get into a tiebreaker.  The last game was a deuce point.  Dom served and they hit a great return cross court.  Then Dom hit a running backhand up the line.  It was incredible and one of the greatest shots that I have ever seen under pressure."

SINGLES RESULTS
Karcz was the first Warrior to finish with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Barnuevo at No. 1 singles.

"Niklas got back on track to winning," said Morrow.  "He looked great, and felt confident and comfortable."

At No. 3 singles, Renaudie notched a 6-2, 6-3 victory versus Slavov.

"Pierre had another nice match," Morrow commented.  "He was down in the second set, but won a bunch of games in a row to make a comeback.  He had a lot of aces and was moving around the court amazingly."

Sophomore Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) fell 6-2, 6-3 in his No. 2 singles match vs. Kuyama.

"Max's opponent was very good," stated Morrow.  "He had solid returns and was a great groundstroker.  He pulled it out against Max and won two straight sets."

After a close first set (7-5), Spicer swept Codita in the second set (6-0) of their No. 4 singles match.

"Dom started slow and was down 4-1 in the first match, but he came storming back and won about 10 consecutive games," Morrow recalled.

Laws played a strong match against Ivanov with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles.

"Luke came to the net and volleyed really well," said Morrow.  "He stayed close in the second set for a little bit, but earned the win."

At No. 6 singles, Solar was last off the courts after tallying a 6-3, 6-4 victory versus Brayden Doherty.

"David played and served really well," Morrow commented.  "The first set was a little easier.  He got an early break and held it out."

WARRIOR STRONG
Morrow awarded Karcz the Match Ball recipient after easily winning both at No. 1 doubles (6-2) and No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-1).
