Softball Splits On What Becomes Final Day of Spring Season

Warriors blank Lake Erie 5-0, then edged 2-0 by Kutztown.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (10-5 overall) split its Thursday contests blanking Lake Erie (1-10 overall) 5-0, before falling 2-0 to Kutztown (12-6 overall).  These were the final two games of the 2019-20 academic year for any WSU athletic team due to COVID-19.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Warriors snapped a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the fourth.  Junior Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) reached on a fielding error.  After a fielder's choice, senior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) doubled advancing junior Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) to third.  Sophomore Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Kressler with the game's first run.

WSU expanded its lead to 4-0 with a trio of runs in the fifth.  Junior Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) led off with an infield single and moved to second when senior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) reached on an error.  Following a fly out, freshman Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Township, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) singled to load the bases.  Psencika hit a 3-1 offering up the middle scoring a pair of runs.  Kressler's sacrifice fly plated Nadolny making it 4-0.

Wayne State's final run of the season came in the bottom of the sixth as freshman Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio) had a pinch-hit single and advanced to second on a ground out.  Kaple scored when Adams singled up the middle.

IN THE CIRCLE

Claydon improved to 4-1 by tossing a four-hit shutout.  She struck out six and walked one.

Carly Rowland (1-3) pitched the first five innings for the Storm and allowed just one earned run (four runs total) on five hits.  She did not walk or strikeout a batter.  Parker Viele pitched the sixth allowing one earned run on two hits.

Seven different WSU batters had a hit and five different players scored.

Chloe Allen reached base twice via a single and a walk.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Golden Bears scored the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth.  Kate Ostaszewski doubled to left field and advanced to third on a single to right by Gillian Walsh.  Hannah Auvil following with a single through the left side to plate the game's first run.  Walsh moved to third on a fly out and scored on a fielder's choice.

The Warriors had chances to score with a runner at second and one out in the second; and had a runner reach base in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.  In the top of the seventh, Adams worked a one-out walk and sophomore Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) followed with a pinch-hit single moving pinch-runner Emily Guzzo (London, Ont.) to second.  The next two batters were retired ending the game and the season.

IN THE CIRCLE

Sophomore Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) limited Kutztown to five hits and two earned runs in six innings but had her record fall to 3-3.  Ameel struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Amber Brugger (4-2) pitched the first 6.1 innings and held WSU scoreless on four hits.  She did not record a strikeout and walked two.  Bridget Bailey retired both batters she faced for her third save of the season.
