Men's Tennis Tops Sacred Heart, 4-3

The Warriors played their first of five matches in Florida.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis squad (8-1 overall) edged Sacred Heart (3-9 overall), 4-3, at the USTA Tennis Center in Orlando on Wednesday.

DOUBLES RESULTS
Sophomore David Solar (Prague, Czech Republic) and freshman Dom Spicer (London, England) notched a 6-3 victory over Seiji Hosokawa and William Wibner at No. 1 doubles.

At No. 2 doubles, senior Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) and sophomore Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win against Ayman Khan and Tyler Lowe.

Freshmen Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Ryan Okonski (Stevensville, Mich. / St. Joseph) earned the final doubles win (6-4) at the third flight vs. Matic Podlipnik and Omar Abdo.

"The match today was hard-fought," commented head coach Bryan Morrow.  "We were dealing with conditions that we haven't had to face, against a good team.  We also had to move our No. 2 doubles up to the first flight and they played a nice match.  Ryan stepped in nicely at No. 3 doubles to pull out a win with Luke.  I was really pleased with the overall doubles performance today."

SINGLES RESULTS
Okonski was first off the courts after falling 6-2, 6-3 to Abdo at No. 6 singles.

Solar tallied the first WSU singles win at the fifth flight against Peter Roessel (6-3, 6-3).

"David played a solid first set," Morrow recalled.  "His opponent picked up his game in the second set but David held him off.  He took care of a win that we needed."

Laws pulled out a close super-tiebreak win (6-1, 6-2, 11-9) versus Podlipnik at No. 4 singles.

"Luke played a nice first set but lost some energy in the second set," stated Morrow.  "Luke battled in the tiebreaker.  He was up but his opponent came storming back.  Luke held him off and ended up pulling out a win."

At No. 1 singles, Renuadie won his first set 6-3 but dropped his second set to Hosokawa in a tiebreaker (7-6 (7-5)).  He nearly swept his opponent 10-1 in the super tiebreaker, securing the Green and Gold victory.

"Pierre ended up dominating in the super tiebreaker," remarked Morrow.  "He played a pretty perfect third-set breaker."

Rink and Spicer both suffered super-tiebreak losses.  Rink fell 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 to Wibmer at No. 2 singles.  Spicer lost his No. 3 singles match 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 versus Khan.

"Max started slow, but got used to the weather and played a great second set," recalled Morrow.  "The third-set tiebreaker was really competitive and could have gone either way.  Max played a real nice match.  Dom also started slow and had trouble getting used to the wind and weather.  Once he got into the match, he made a nice comeback in the second set after being down 5-2.  There were a lot of close points in the third-set tiebreaker."

WARRIOR STRONG
Renaudie received the Game Ball after clinching not only the doubles point at the second flight, but the Wayne State win at No. 1 singles.  He is currently 8-1 in both singles and doubles matches.
