Baseball Wins Both Games on Monday

The Warriors topped Sioux Falls 12-2 and Northern State 8-2.

SANFORD, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (11-3 overall) continued its Spring Break schedule on Monday with two more games.  The Warriors started the day by winning 12-2 against Sioux Falls (4-8 overall) in a run-shortened seven innings before cruising past Northern State (0-11 overall) 8-2.

GAME ONE vs. SIOUX FALLS (W, 12-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Cougars took an early 2-0 lead on two hits and a WSU error in the top of the first inning.  Redshirt sophomore Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) tied the game in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run double into left field.

The Warriors scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to open up a 10-2 advantage.  RBI from junior Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) and Tanderys started the scoring before two more runs scored on an error and sophomore Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) plated two with a double to left, giving WSU an 8-2 lead.  A two-run double from redshirt sophomore Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) pushed the home lead to 10-2.

A solo home run by senior Preston Pilat (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice) in the sixth inning and another RBI by MacLean in the seventh inning put the final tally at 12-2.  The game was called after seven innings.

AT THE PLATE
DeLanoy, MacLean and Tanderys all had two hits, while Tanderys led the attack with three RBI.

ON THE MOUND
Graduate student Austin Atwood (Dearborn, Mich. / Edsel Ford) (1-1) earned his first victory in the Green & Gold by allowing one earned run in six innings and striking out nine batters.  Senior Matt Krutsch (Essex, Ont.) worked the final frame and did not allow a base runner.

GAME TWO vs. NORTHERN STATE (W, 8-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Redshirt senior Robert Iacobelli (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice) gave WSU a 2-0 lead with a two-run double into center field in the top of the second inning.  Ramirez extended Wayne State's lead to 3-0 with an RBI double in the top of the third inning.

A sacrifice fly by MacLean in the fourth inning made it 4-0.  Redshirt sophomore CJ Drogosch (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) singled home a run in the seventh, while redshirt sophomore Nate Roede (Byron Center, Mich.) followed with an RBI single to give the Warriors a 6-0 lead.

The Wolves scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning in a sac fly and trimmed WSU's lead to 6-2 with a run in the eighth on another sac fly.

Drogosch collected another RBI on a single in the ninth before sophomore Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) added the Warriors' eighth run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field.

AT THE PLATE
Drogosch went 2-for-2 with two RBI coming off the bench.  Ramirez and Iacobelli both finished with two hits.

ON THE MOUND
Freshman Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) started and pitched four scoreless innings to go with two strikeouts.  Freshman Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) (1-0) was also effective, allowing a run in three innings before senior Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) allowed a run in his inning of 2/3 of work.  Redshirt sophomore Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) recorded the final out in his first appearance on the mound this season.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will enjoy a day off on Tuesday before returning to the diamond on Wednesday against Minnesota State
