Football Adjusts 2020 Schedule

Warriors had cut back to 10 games per NCAA Regulations.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football team was supposed to begin the 2020 season on Sept. 5 with a game at Slippery Rock.

Last month, the NCAA Division II President's Council voted to reduce the minimum number of contests needed for sport sponsorship and championships selection.

Since the NCAA has limited Division II football teams to only 10 games next season, the Warriors will now open the season at Slippery Rock on Sept. 12th.  Kick-off against the defending national semifinalists will be at 1 p.m. at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The home game against Truman State originally scheduled for Sept. 12, 2020, will now be played on Sept. 11, 2021, at Tom Adams Field.

The remaining nine games on the 2020 schedule beginning with a Sept. 19th home game vs. Missouri S&T remains unchanged.

While these schedule modifications are the first announced changes for 2020-21, there are still many questions to be answered before the return of sports to campuses this fall.  Most of those decisions will be announced at a later date based on available information and recommendations from local, regional and national health and safety organizations.

Volleyball has been reduced to 20 dates and basketball teams will only be permitted to play 22 regular-season games.  In addition, baseball (40 games) and softball (44 games) had their number of contests reduced for the 2020-21 academic year only, while the tennis squads also saw a reduction in the number of match dates (down to 17).
