Football Ends Losing Skein At Davenport With 16-3 Triumph

Myren Harris rushes for 131 yards and a touchdown.

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- The Wayne State University football team (1-6 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) ended its string of tough-luck losses with a 16-3 triumph at Davenport University (2-5 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

Each team punted on its initial possession, before the host Panthers drove 59 yards with Bryan Plegue connecting on a 26-yard field goal attempt on the 11th play of the drive.

Second Quarter

The next four possessions (two for each team) ended in punts.

The Warriors took over at their own 13 and drove 87 yards in seven plays to take a 7-3 lead with 6:32 remaining in the first half.  Freshman Myren Harris (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Chippewa Valley) had a 17-yard run on the second play.  Two plays after a 12-yard gain by Harris, graduate student Karmi Mackey (Tampa, Fla. / Seffner Christian Academy) rambled 29 yards down to the DU one-yard line.  Mackey scored his first WSU touchdown on the very next play.

The "punt" theme continued for the next three drives, however the Warriors' Koriante Moore (Flint, Mich. / Hamady) fumbled on a punt return giving Davenport the last possession of the first half.  A 37-yard field goal attempt on the last play was wide right.

Third Quarter

Each squad punted on its first possession of the second half, before an interception gave the Panthers a first down at the WSU 35.  On the fifth play of the DU drive, sophomore cornerback Dalen Peeks (Akron, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) intercepted a pass in the end zone.

The WSU offense responded with a 76-yard drive culminating in a 21-yard field goal by freshman Griffin Milovanksi (Saugatuck, Mich.), which gave the Warriors a 10-3 advantage.

On Davenport's first play from scrimmage following the kickoff, sophomore Damond Duncan (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) forced a fumble that was recovered by junior linebacker Niko Mosley (W. Bloomfield, Mich.) at the DU 24.

After a 15-yard penalty on Wayne State for an unsportsmanlike conduct, sophomore Jesse Prewitt III (Columbus, Ohio / Northland) had a two-yard reception from junior quarterback Chase Churchill (Richmond, Mich.) followed by a 12-yard scamper by Harris on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Harris gained another four yards before a false start penalty on WSU.  Following a rush for zero yards, Harris went around the right end for a 26-yard touchdown run on a third-and-11 play putting Wayne State ahead 16-3.

Both teams punted on their next possessions.  Davenport drove inside the WSU five after a six-yard pass, but two plays netted minus one yard before an illegal forward pass on fourth down ended the drive with 1:17 left.

Harris gained 11 yards on three carries to run out the clock.

TEAM STATS

Wayne State had a 299-287 edge in total offense, including a 99-72 advantage in passing yards.  WSU went 5-of-13 on third down, compared to 3-of-15 for the Panthers.  The teams combined for 13 punts (seven by DU and six by the Warriors).

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Harris notched his third consecutive 100-yard game totaling 131 yards on 19 attempts with one touchdown.  Mackey added 50 yards on 13 carries with a score.  Churchill passed for 99 yards on 6-of-16 with one interception.
