Volleyball Cruises to Sweep at Northwood

The Warriors will be back in action at LSSU on Saturday.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (17-5 overall, 9-2 GLIAC) won in four sets at Northwood (10-11 overall, 4-7 GLIAC) on Friday night.  The Warriors won all three sets by scored of 25-23.  WSU has its sights set on a home GLIAC quarterfinal game on Nov. 17th.  The top four teams will host a playoff game before the remaining four programs will travel to the top remaining seed's campus for the the semifinals and championship match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Timberwolves led the opening set 6-3 and 10-6.  The Warriors used an NU error and a kill by Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) to trim the deficit to 13-11.  An ace from Shell brought WSU within one, 14-13.  Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) tied the set at 16-16 with a kill, forcing Northwood to use a timeout.  Another point from Kray and a kill by Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) pushed the Green & Gold ahead 18-16.  The momentum stayed with WSU as it stretched its lead to 21-18 following a 3-0 run.  Points from Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) and Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) gave Wayne State a hard-earned 25-23 victory to begin the match.

The Warriors led the second set 5-1 after back-to-back kills from Kray and eventually 8-3.  A point by Withun plus a T-Wolves error gave WSU a 14-10 advantage.  A Wagner kill pushed the visitors' lead to 16-11 and a service ace from Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) made it 20-14.  Withun had the hot hand down the stretch and propelled WSU to another 25-23 victory.

A combo block from Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) and Kray early in the third set gave the Green & Gold a 5-3 lead.  Another assisted block, this one from VanderWal and Shell, made it 10-6 before the Warriors used a point from Wagner to stay in front 15-13.  Kills from VanderWal and Withun made it 22-16.  NU would hang around and trailed 23-21 and 24-23 before another spike by Withun ended the set and match.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Withun was extremely efficient, hitting .462 and led the Warriors with 14 kills.  Duffield tallied 45 assists, while Benoit had a match-high 15 digs.

ONE BIG THING
The Wayne State block was strong all night and tallied seven total blocks compared to NU's four.
