Volleyball Punches Ticket to NCAA Tournament

DETROIT -- For the first time since 1994, the Wayne State University volleyball program will be playing in the NCAA Tournament.  As announced via an NCAA.com selection show on Monday night, the Warriors are one of the final 64 teams left playing.

It will be the third time in program history that WSU will be participating in the NCAA postseason (1987 and 1994).  Wayne State is the seventh-seed in the Midwest Region and will meet second-seeded Michigan Tech in Big Rapids as Ferris State has hosting duties as thew top seed.  It will be the third matchup between the two teams this season.  Earlier today, Wayne State was receiving votes in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll.

"We are humbled and honored to have been selected to compete in the NCAA Championships," said head coach Tim Koth.  "Our program has been inching closer to this goal for several seasons, and we are thrilled to have finally achieved it in 2021."

The Warriors are led by six All-GLIAC selections in setter Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) and GLIAC Coach of the Year Tim Koth.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.), Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) and Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) were First Team honorees, while Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) and Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) earned a spot on the All-GLIAC Second Team.  Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) was named to the Honorable Mention squad.

After a 4-8 season during the unique 2020-21 campaign, Koth helped guide the Warriors to a 20-win season, which is the most victories since 1998.  The Green & Gold swept Saginaw Valley State in a GLIAC Quarterfinal contest on Nov. 17th, the first home playoff game since 2010 for WSU.
