Softball Splits At #19-Grand Valley State

Warriors won the nightcap 4-0.

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (12-4 overall, 5-3 GLIAC) split a conference doubleheader at No. 19-Grand Valley State University (16-4 overall, 7-1 GLIAC) on Tuesday afternoon.  The host Lakers won the opener 8-0 in six innings, before the Warriors rebounded for a 4-0 whitewash in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
GVSU scored once in the bottom of the first on two singles sandwiched around a walk.

Grand Valley State extended its lead with a five-run fourth inning.  Bailey Thatcher had a two-run single and Megan Koenigshof followed with a two-run triple.

Laker Lydia Goble had a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to end the game.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits in 5.1 innings to fall to 6-2.  She struck out two and walked one.

Hannah Beatus (7-2) notched the win for GVSU limiting Wayne State to three singles over six innings.  She struck out two and walked one.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Senior catcher Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) reached base twice with a hit and a walk.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Taylor Rieger, Goble and Thatcher each had two hits, with Goble, Thatcher and Koenigshof each recording two RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP
Senior Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.), in her first start on the mound of the season, held the GVSU offense which entered the contest with a .344 batting average, to four singles and one double as the Warriors earned the road split.

Four batters into the game, WSU did something it was unable to do in game one - score a run.  Senior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had a one-out single on the 11th pitch of the at bat, and senior shortstop Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) delivered a two-out RBI triple to center field.

Turkalj doubled down the right field line with one out in the third, and Kressler followed with her first home run of the season to make it 3-0.

Wayne State added to its lead in the fifth as Kressler tripled with two outs and scored on a double by Claydon.

IN THE CIRCLE
Claydon (1-0) retired 13 of the final 16 Laker batters, after beginning the contest sitting down seven of the first eight GVSU hitters.  It was Claydon's second career shutout in six starts (March 12, 2020 vs. Lake Erie).  She struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Ashley Platek (5-2) started for GVSU and allowed three earned runs on eight hits in four innings.  She struck out one and did not walk a batter.  Samantha Gehrls pitched the final three innings and allowed one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Kressler had 10 total bases on two triples and a home run, along with three RBI and two runs scored.  Senior third baseman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) had two hits.  Kressler's 10 total bases marks the 10th time in the last 20 years a Warrior has garnered 10 total bases in a contest.  The last to do it was Brooke Nadolny on March 10, 2020, vs. Bridgeport.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Nikoma Holmen had two hits including a double.
