UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (15-6 overall, 7-2 GLIAC) strengthened its grasp on first place in the GLIAC standings with a 13-6 win at Saginaw Valley State (9-7 overall, 5-4 GLIAC) on Friday afternoon. The Warriors scored three runs in the first, four runs in the third and four runs in the fifth to power their offensive attack.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors started fast with three runs on two hits in the top of the first inning. A bases-loaded walk to redshirt junior Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) plated the game's first run before senior Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) gave WSU a 3-0 lead with a two-run single into center field.
Wayne State added four more runs on four hits in the top of the third inning. Travis blasted a solo home run over the wall in center before redshirt junior Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) drove in a run with a single and senior Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) made it 7-0 with a two-run double. The Cardinals broke through with a pair of runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning but starting pitcher Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) (4-1) struck out an SVSU batter with the bases loaded to limit the damage.
A sacrifice fly off the bat of Finkbeiner in the top of the fifth inning drove in WSU's eighth run of the day before a bases-clearing double from Tanderys made it 11-2. An infield single by junior Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) brought freshman CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) home after he doubled to lead off the sixth inning, making it 12-2.
Miller added another RBI with a sac fly in the top of the ninth inning. SVSU made a rally in the bottom of the ninth inning and scored four runs on three hits and a WSU error.
AT THE PLATE
Foley led the lineup with three hits, three runs scored and an RBI, while redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.), Travis, Maury and Miller all had two hits. Tanderys and Finkbeiner did major damage with their one hit each, combining for seven RBI. Travis finished 2-for-3 with three RBI.
ON THE MOUND
McInerney collected his fourth win of the season by allowing just two unearned runs over seven innings and striking out five batters. In the process, he lowered his ERA to 0.70. Freshman David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) was called on for the final two frames and allowed four unearned runs and with a strikeout.
