ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Wayne State University baseball team (8-6 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) wrapped up its series at Ashland (7-8 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) on Saturday and the Warriors won a wild game one 14-9 before the Eagles took game two 19-6. The two sides combined for 48 runs and 48 hits in 16 innings.
GAME ONE (W, 14-9)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Ashland took a 3-0 lead with three runs on three hits and a WSU error in the bottom of the first inning. Wayne State responded with five runs on three hits and an Eagle error in the top of the second to take a 5-3 lead. Senior Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) started the scoring with an RBI before junior Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) cleared the bases with a Grand Slam to left field.
A leadoff double for the home team and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second made it 5-4. The Eagles would take an 8-5 lead with four runs on four hits, including a three-run blast, in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The slugfest continued in the top of the fifth when the Green & Gold scored four runs on four hits, including a two-run double from redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) and an RBI triple by redshirt junior Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson). Ashland tied the game at 9-9 with a run scoring on a balk in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Wayne State broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning with five runs on three hits. Travis delivered a two-run single, while junior Jacob Badalamenti (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Warren De La Salle) smacked an RBI double to right center to give WSU a 14-9 lead.
Redshirt senior Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) would strand a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Warriors the victory.
AT THE PLATE
Miller finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBI, while Tanderys went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Travis drove in three runs with a pair of hits, while DeLanoy had two RBI.
ON THE MOUND
Senior Nicholas O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) allowed eight runs (five earned) on nine hits and struck out two batters. Redshirt junior Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) allowed a run in 1/3 of an inning before redshirt senior Brendan Bilkovic (West Bloomfield, Mich.) (2-0) worked a scoreless inning and 2/3. Schmidt struck out one batter in his scoreless inning.
GAME TWO (L, 6-19)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles scored first once again with four runs on two hits and two walks in the bottom of the second inning. DeLanoy put WSU on the board with a sac fly to right field in the top of the third inning before Ashland responded with a run on two hits in the bottom of the third inning.
Redshirt junior Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) brought the Warriors within three, 5-2, with an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning but Wayne State left runners on first and second. The home side would score four runs on two hits and a WSU error in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 9-2.
Graduate student Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) sent a two-run home run out to left center in the top of the fifth inning to make it 9-3 but Ashland's bats would stay hot with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to stretch advantage to 11-3. Wayne State would not go away and senior Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) connected for his first home run of the season, trimming the deficit to 11-5. The Eagles scored their 12th run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as WSU threw out a runner at second allowing the runner on third to score.
Miller made it 12-6 with an infield RBI single in the top of the seventh inning but AU would score five runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh, including back-to-back home runs. Ashland continued to pour it on and scored twice more in the bottom of the eighth inning.
AT THE PLATE
Foley turned in a 3-for-4 game with two runs and an RBI, while MacLean and Miller both had two hits and an RBI.
ON THE MOUND
Sophomore Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) (1-1) allowed 11 runs (nine earned) in four innings. Redshirt sophomore Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) worked the next three innings and allowed six runs (five earned) with four strikeouts before junior Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) allowed two runs (one earned) in the eighth inning.
