Baseball Rallies to Win Opener at Purdue Northwest

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (17-8 overall, 9-4 GLIAC) stayed on the road for the second consecutive weekend and won the series opener 7-2 at Purdue Northwest (9-17 overall, 3-14 GLIAC).  Reigning GLIAC Pitcher of the Week Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) (5-1) added to his spectacular season resume with a complete game victory.  The Warriors scored all seven runs in the fifth inning or later to come back from a 1-0 deficit.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pride struck first with a run on two hits and an error in the bottom of the first inning.  A 6-4-3 double play helped McInerney escape with limited damage.  WSU loaded the bases with three singles in the top of the fifth inning and a fielder's choice RBI from senior Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) tied the game at 1-1 but that would be all the offense as PNW stranded two runners.

The Warriors took a 2-1 advantage after scoring a run on two hits in the top of the sixth inning.  Graduate student Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) started the frame with a single to left field and senior Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) followed with a one-out knock.  Redshirt junior Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) drove in the go-ahead tally.  In the seventh inning, Finkbeiner extended the visitors' lead to 3-1 with a groundout and a Purdue Northwest throwing error allowed two more runs to touch home.  Travis pushed the lead to 6-1 with an RBI double down the right field line.

PNW got a run in the bottom gof the eighth inning on an RBI groundout but that would be as close as the home team would get.  Redshirt junior Nate Roede (Byron Center, Mich.) added a run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning.  McInerney retired the Pride in order in the bottom of the ninth for his second career nine-inning complete game.

AT THE PLATE
Junior Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) led the offense by going 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.  MacLean finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored.  Travis and junior Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) both turned in two-hit performances.

ON THE MOUND
McInerney improved to 5-1 and struck out six batters over his nine innings of work.  He allowed two runs on five hits and a walk.

UP NEXT
WSU will play twice against the Pride on Saturday beginning at 2:00 PM ET.
