Softball Drops Pair on Senior Day

Warriors final home games on Tuesday.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (18-18 overall, 11-17 GLIAC) was unable to ride the emotion of Senior Day and dropped both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Saginaw Valley State University (27-12 overall, 16-10 GLIAC) on Sunday.  The Cardinals scored twice in the top of the first in both contests winning the opener 4-1, then SVSU rallied from a 5-2 deficit after one inning to defeat the Warriors 6-5 in the nightcap with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.

GAME ONE RECAP
Three singles and a walked by Saginaw Valley produced the game's first two runs in the top of the first.  WSU had the bases loaded in the bottom of the first but back-to-back fly outs ended the frame.

Starting with the two fly outs, the two starting pitchers combined to retire 17 consecutive batters before Warrior senior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) had an infield hit with the Cardinal second baseman making a nice sliding stop to keep the ball in the infield.

SVSU extended its lead to 3-0 in the fifth as Blasia Moyler had a leadoff double, went to third on a fly out, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sabrina Sage.

In the sixth, Saginaw Valley's Jackie Popko had a leadoff triple and scored on an RBI single by Julia Salisbury.

Turkalj had a one-out single in the sixth, then with two outs seniors Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) and Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had back-to-back singles against SVSU relief pitcher Alyssa Muench to score Turkalj.  After a walk to senior Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) loaded the bases a pop out ended the inning.

IN THE CIRCLE
Sophomore Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) went the distance allowing four earned runs on seven hits.  She struck out two and walked one to even her record at 4-4.

Saginaw Valley starter Emily Depew (9-1) allowed one earned run on five hits in 5.1 innings.  She struck out four and walked two.  Muench pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing hits and one walk, while recording two strikeouts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Turkalj went 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Dodge had two hits.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Popko had two hits and two runs scored.

GAME TWO RECAP
For the second straight game, SVSU plated two runs in the top of the first.  A single, a walk, and a sacrifice bunt preceded a two-run single by Leah Denome.

Wayne State responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning.  Senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff single that was deflected by a diving Cardinal second baseman.  After a fielder's choice, Nadolny singled and Turkalj drew a walk to load the bases.  Dodge's fielder's choice produced one run as smart base running by Turkalj prevented a double play.  Junior catcher Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay) had an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2, and Adams followed with a two-run double.  Sophomore outfielder Breanna Paolatto plated Adams with an RBI single to make it 5-2.

The Warriors, after having at least one base runners in both the second and third innings but unable to score, saw the Cardinals start chipping away at the WSU advantage.  Saginaw Valley scored once in the fifth as Sarah Gersch had a leadoff single, stole second, went to third on a ground out and score on a Salisbury ground out.

SVSU pulled within one in the sixth on a solo home run by Moyler, her team-leading 11th of the campaign.

Wayne State had a chance to extend its lead in the sixth as Ludwig and Adams had back-to-back single and both pinch-runners advanced into scoring position on a ground out.  A foul out and a ground out ended the frame.

In the top of the seventh after the first batter struck out, Popko walked and Salisbury laced one to left that was tailing away from the left fielder (and probably aided by the wind) for a double.  A wild pitch scored the tying run and an infield single scored scored the go-ahead run.

The Warriors tried to answer back as senior Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a wild pitch.  However she was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice.  Turkalj singled with one out but the next two batters were retired.

IN THE CIRCLE
All four WSU pitchers saw action.  Junior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks in two innings.  She struck out two.  Senior Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) allowed one earned run in three innings on four hits.  Freshman Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) surrendered three earned runs on two hits and two walks in 1.1 innings, while Nadolny retired two of the three batters she faced.

Jaclyn Groves was lifted after facing four batters in the bottom of the first.  She allowed three earned runs on two hits and one walk in 0.1 innings.  Julia Mundy (9-4) limited Wayne State to two earned runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings, with one strikeout to three walks.  Muench notched her second save of the season by retiring both batters she faced.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Turkalj, Ludwig and Adams each had two hits, with both Turkalj and Ludwig also reaching via a walk.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Denome went 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Gersch had two hits and two runs scored.

WSU SENIORS
Adams, Claydon, Clayton, Dodge and Turkalj were recognized before Saturday's first game along with retiring head coach Gary Bryce and assistant coach Pat Kent.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will conclude the regular season with a home doubleheader on Tuesday vs. Ferris State, and a Saturday twinbill at Purdue Northwest.
