Softball Finishes Regular Season With Split At Purdue Northwest

WSU won the opener 3-0, but fell 9-8 in game two.

HAMMOND, Ind. – The Wayne State University softball squad (21-19 overall, 14-18 GLIAC) concluded its 2021 regular-season campaign with a GLIAC doubleheader at Purdue Northwest (14-24 overall, 11-16 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors won the opener 3-0, before falling 9-8 in the nightcap, a game in which WSU led 6-0 and 8-6.

GAME ONE RECAP
The visiting Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) led off the contest with a single.  She went to third on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) along with a Pride throwing error.  After a pop out, senior catcher Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) laced a single to right center plating Psenicka.

WSU extended its advantage with a pair of runs in the third.  Sophomore Brooke Nadolny (Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) had a leadoff double to center, and with one out, senior Amy Claydon (Cambridge, Ont.) drilled a 2-0 offering over the center field fence for her fourth home run of the season.

After hitting PNW's first batter of the game, Nadolny settled down retiring the next 13 Pride batters until back-to-back infield singles in the fifth.  She set down the next seven Purdue Northwest hitters until a pitch-hit single with two outs in the seventh.

IN THE CIRCLE
Nadolny (6-4) tossed a three-hit shutout for her first career whitewash.  She struck out four and did not walk a batter, while throwing just 77 pitches (51 for strikes).

Jessica Weaver (4-7) tossed a complete game for the Pride allowing three earned runs on eight hits.  She struck out two and walked two, while throwing 83 pitches (52 strikes).

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Psenicka, Nadolny, Turkalj and Claydon each had two hits as the top five in the WSU order went 8-for-17 with a walk, three runs scored and three RBI.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Allison Arnold, Jessica DeBoer and Taylor Stevens each had a single.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State grabbed a 4-0 lead in the top of the second as Claydon had a leadoff single and went to second on a one-out single by senior right fielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.).  Freshman Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) drew a walk to load the bases.  Senior third baseman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. /Rochester) hit an opposite-field grand slam to right (see below for more notes on WSU grand slams).

The next inning the Warriors increased their advantage to 6-0 as Nadolny and Turkalj had back-to-back singles to start the frame.  After a strikeout and a fielder's choice, Clayton delivered a two-run single.  The hit for Turkalj was her 200th as a Warrior.

Purdue Northwest scored once in the third on a leadoff triple by Kara Aloisio and a one-out double by Sabryna Stanley.

The Pride tied the game in the fourth with a five-run inning on four singles and a three-run blast by Stanley.  All five runs were scored with two outs.

WSU responded with two runs in the top of the fifth as Nadolny reached on an error, and Turkalj had an infield single.  After a lineout, junior catcher Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay) drove in the go-ahead run, while Wayne State's final run scored on a fielder's choice.

In the bottom of the fifth, PNW scored three times on a walk, a single, a two-run double by DeBoer and two wild pitches.

GRAND SLAM NOTES
The last Warrior to hit a grand slam was Megan Guitar on March 10, 2018, vs. St. Thomas Aquinas in Clermont, Fla.  WSU had two grand slams in a three-day span in 2017 as Kylee Barrett cleared the bases at Northwood, and two days later Lyndsay Butler smacked a grand slam at Tiffin.  Both Barrett (4/20/2016 at SVSU) and Jade McGarr (3/6/2016 vs. Queen's) had grand slams in 2016.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) started for WSU and allowed five earned runs on six hits in 3.2 innings with two strikeouts.  Claydon (6-4) recorded two outs, while surrendering four runs (three earned) on four hits with one walk and one strikeout.  Nadolny allowed one hit in 1.2 innings with a walk, but had two wild pitches.

Courtney Blackwell (8-9) tossed the complete game for Purdue Northwest. She allowed eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Clayton went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while both Turkalj and Ludwig went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Aubrey Shroyer, DeBoer, Aloisio and Stanley each had two hits.
