Baseball Student-Athlete Receives Academic All-District Recognition from CoSIDA

MacLean selected to First Team All-District.

DETROIT -- Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day), a graduate student on the 2021 Wayne State University baseball team, was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team as announced by the organization earlier this afternoon.  He was honored for combining excellence in the classroom and on the field.  MacLean advances to the national ballot.

He earned a bachelor's degree in Management in August of 2020 and is currently pursuing an MBA.  MacLean was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) all eight semesters at WSU and is a member of the WSU Student-Athlete Leadership Council.

As a freshman in 2018, he played in 33 games and made 25 starts (16 in LF, 7 at DH, and 2 at 3B).  MacLean hit .342 with five doubles, one triple and 14 RBI, while also drawing 18 walks and scoring 15 runs.  He posted a .469 on-base percentage along with a .434 slugging percentage.

The following year (2019), MacLean was selected to the D2CCA and ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Second Team after being voted to the All-GLIAC First Team.   He played in 46 games and made 45 starts (21 in LF, 14 at 1B, and 10 at DH).  MacLean hit .350 with 13 doubles and eight home runs, while driving in 37 runs.  He scored 43 times, had a .581 slugging percentage and a .470 on-base percentage after drawing 28 walks.

In the COVID shortened season of 2020, MacLean started all 15 games (13 at 1B and 2 in LF) and hit .392 with a team-best 19 RBI.  He scored 14 runs and had four doubles along with two home runs for 30 total bases.  MacLean recorded a .588 slugging percentage and a .460 on-base percentage.

During the 2021 campaign, he played in 39 games and made 37 starts (20 at 1B, 13 in LF, and 4 at DH).  MacLean hit .308 with eight doubles, two triples and a six home runs.  He drove in 22 runs and scored 30 times, while posting a .564 slugging and a .474 on-base percentage.  MacLean led the roster with 29 walks.

Over his four seasons with the Green and Gold, MacLean has started 122 of 133 games played, and hit .342 (138-for-404) with 49 extra-base hits (30 doubles, 3 triples and 16 home runs).  He has totaled 92 RBI and has walked 82 times to 83 strikeouts.  MacLean has also contributed 14 stolen bases.
