Football Falls 47-43 In Waning Seconds At Davenport

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- For the second week in a row on the road, the Wayne State University football team (1-6 overall, 0-3 GLIAC) fell in the final seconds of the game, this time 47-43 at Davenport University (6-0 overall, 3-0 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
After WSU punted on its initial possession, the Panthers drove inside the Warrior 30-yard line but a pass by Jason Whittaker was tipped by Wayne State linebacker Matt Buschman (Brighton, Mich.) and intercepted by senior defensive end Jacob Mass (Livonia, Mich. / Franklin).  Mass returned the pick to the WSU 48.  Following the Wayne State offense garnering a first down, sophomore running back Myren Harris (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Chippewa Valley) scampered 38 yards for the first score of the game.  The three-play, 52-yard drive took just 1:10 off the clock.

DU responded with a five-play, 38-yard touchdown drive following a 49-yard kickoff return by Alonzell Henderson.  A 20-yard completion on third-and-14 from Whittaker to Brenden Sherrod, preceded a nine-yard touchdown pass from Whittaker to Preston Smith.

The Warriors punted on their next possession, but Whittaker's first-and-goal pass on the seventh play of the ensuing drive was intercepted in the end zone by junior cornerback Drake Reid (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester).

Davenport tied the game on an eight-play, 71-yard drive as Smith hauled in an eight-yard pass from Whittaker.

WSU regained the lead at 21-14 with a 10-play, 56-yard drive culminating in a three-yard touchdown run by graduate student Karmi Mackey (Tampa, Fla. / Seffner Christian Academy).

The Panthers knotted the game at 21-21 just five plays after a muffed punt return by the Warriors.  Smith caught his third touchdown pass of the game with 61 seconds left in the first half.

Third Quarter

Fourth Quarter
A DU drive that began in the final minute of the third period, concluded on two-yard touchdown run by Caleef Jenkins, which gave Davenport its first lead of the game with 14:11 remaining in the fourth stanza.  The two-point pass attempt was no good making it a five-point game at 33-28.
