Volleyball Stumbles on Senior Day

Northern Michigan won in three sets on Saturday.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (17-10, 10-6 GLIAC) lost its final regular season home match to Northern Michigan (20-7, 12-4 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon in three sets.  The Wildcats won by set scores of 25-15, 26-24 and 25-18.

Lauren VanderWal, Maddie Morrison, Maddy Benoit, Sam Palazzolo, Kamryn Duffield and Halle Shell all were recognized alongside their families following the match in a Senior Day ceremony.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams struggled serving the entire match and a NMU service error gave Wayne State a 4-3 lead early in the first set.  The set was tied at 8-8 before the Wildcats took a 14-10 lead on a WSU attacking error.  The visitors' lead grew to 20-14 en route to win 25-15.

The Warriors won the first four points of the second set.  Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) gave the Green & Gold a 6-4 advantage with a kill.  Northern Michigan responded and led 9-6.  An ace from Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) put Wayne State back on top 11-9.  Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) kept the Warriors on top 14-13.  The set remained tied at 15-15, 16-15, 17-17 and 18-18.  NMU opened up a 21-19 advantage but WSU was able to stay close and tied the game at 23-23 and 24-24.  The Wildcats captured the final two points to win 26-24.

A from kill Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) trimmed the NMU lead to 7-5 early in the third set.  A point by VanderWal brought WSU within five, 12-7.  However Norther Michigan controlled the rest of the set and won 25-18.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal led WSU with 10 kills, while Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) dished out 26 assists.  VanderWal also had a team-high seven digs.

POSTSEASON OUTLOOK
The Green & Gold are still in a strong position in the GLIAC standings..  The top four teams at the end of the regular season will host a league quarterfinal matchup on Nov. 9th.  The top remaining seed after the first round will host the two semifinal matchups and the championship game.
