Softball Splits First Two Games In Florida

Warriors blank New Haven 3-0 in the opener.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- After having the opening day of its spring break trip rained out, the Wayne State University softball team (3-3 overall) returned to the diamond on Sunday.  WSU blanked the University of New Haven (2-2 overall) 3-0 in the first game, before falling 5-1 in the second contest against eighth-ranked Augustana (13-4 overall).

GAME ONE RECAP
The Chargers were retired 1-2-3 in the top of the first, and the Warriors wasted little time scoring twice in the bottom of the frame.

Sophomore shortstop Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) had a one-out single to left, and junior first baseman Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) followed with a single through the left side.  Following a strikeout, graduate student third baseman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) had an RBI single to right on the 12th pitch of the at bat.  Myers took a called strike on the first pitch, then fouled off nine consecutive pitches before taking a ball that preceded the RBI hit.  Junior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) singled down the third base line on the seventh pitch of her at bat plating Paolatto.

UNH had one hit in the second inning, and back-to-back two-out singles in the third but did not score.  New Haven had two consecutive one-out base hits in the fourth, but a fielder's choice and a ground out ended that threat.  The Chargers received two walks in the fifth, but a foul out ended that inning.

WSU extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth as Miller worked a five-pitch walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Paolatto.  Freshman outfielder Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) doubled down the left field line but Miller was only able to move to third as she was going to tag on the deep fly ball.  Myers notched another RBI as her sinking line drive fell just in front of the Charger center fielder scoring Miller.

New Haven had one final chance in the top of the seventh with back-to-back one-out singles and a walk to load the bases.  A strikeout and a pop out ended the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) improved to 1-2 by recording the shutout, while scattering seven singles.  She struck out two and walked four.

Mia Iodice (0-2) went the distance for the Chargers allowing three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts to four walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Myers had two hits and two RBI, while Miller was on base three time with one hit and two walks.

LEADING THE CHARGERS
Mya Case, Maeve Lougheed and Melissa Bike had two hits apiece.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State allowed four runs in the bottom of the first in a 5-1 setback to No. 8-Augustana (S.D.).

The Vikings had two runners on base with one outin the bottom of the first following a single and a Warrior miscue.  Cleanup hitter Torri Chute hit a three-run home run just over the fence in left center.  AU added another run in the bottom of the first, on a single and an RBI double by Gracey Brink.

The Warriors scored once in the top of the second as back-to-back one-out singles by senior catcher Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay) and junior outfielder Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio) preceded a sacrifice fly by sophomore pitcher Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon).

Augustana scored the game's final run in the bottom of the fifth on three singles.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk (1-1) allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits in six innings with two strikeouts and two walks.

Ashley Mickschl (3-1) limited WSU to one earned run on four hits in five-plus innings.  She struck out three and did not walk a batter.  Olivia Hazelbaker retired all six batters she faced, including one on strikes.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Ludwig had one of WSU's four singles and scored the lone run.

LEADING THE VIKINGS
Kennedy Buckman had a team-high two hits, while Chute had three RBI.
