Softball Splits Again In Florida; Warriors now 6-4 on the season.

WSU edges Minot State 3-1 in eight innings, after falling to Lock Haven.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (6-4 overall) went 1-1 on Tuesday at the Spring Games.  WSU fell behind early against Lock Haven (6-4 overall) and lost 4-2.  The Warriors went extra innings to defeat Minot State (15-4 overall) 3-1 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
Wayne State starter Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) issued three walks and threw three wild pitches in the top of the first before being relieved by graduate student Emily Karas (Macomb Twp., Mich. / Utica Henry Ford II).  The Bald Eagles scored their first two runs on wild pitches and a third on throwing error to lead 3-0 after a half-inning without the benefit of a hit.

WSU pulled to within two (3-1) in the bottom of the second.  Graduate student third baseman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) had a leadoff single and went to third as junior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) reached on a throwing error.  With two outs, junior outfielder Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio) delivered an RBI single to left.

The Warriors cut their deficit to one (3-2) in the fourth as Bonk smacked her first career home on a 2-2 offering.

Lock Haven regained its two-run advantage in the sixth via a hit by pitch, a stolen base, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.

Wayne State had two hits in the bottom of the seventh by Hodder and sophomore outfielder Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) but Hodder was tagged out after a rundown between third and home.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk (1-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned), while facing three batters.  Karas pitched the final seven innings allowing just one run on two hits with one walk.

Madison Waltman (5-1) tossed a complete game for the Bald Eagles.  She allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and zero walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Fifth-year senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had two of WSU's seven hits.

LEADING THE BALD EAGLES
Ninth-place hitter Morgan Karasek had both of Lock Haven's hits.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Beavers scored once in the third with the Warriors tying the contest in the fifth.  Wayne State scored twice in the top of the eighth for the victory.

Minot State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Jamie Odlum hit a two-hit RBI double scoring Jazmin Karununga, who had singled.

WSU had two runners on base in the fourth but could not score the equalizer.  Freshman Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) led off the fifth with an infield single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior first baseman Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.).  Wrubel moved to third on a single by Kaple, then scored on a ground out by Favela.

The teams combined for just one base runner over the final two-and-a-half innings of regulation.

In the top of the eighth with the international tiebreaker rule being implemented, Hodder walked with ball four being a wild pitch that moved Kaple to third.  Hodder stole second with the throw going into center field allowing Kaple to score.  Psenicka followed with an RBI single scoring Hodder with an insurance run.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Beavers moved the placed runner to third with a sacrifice bunt, by a foul out and a fly out ended the contest.
