Softball Sweeps Doubleheader To Start GLIAC Play

Warriors take two from FSU - 6-3 and 8-0.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (9-11 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) began conference play with a pair of wins over visiting Ferris State University (9-16 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) on Thursday afternoon at Gary L Bryce Field in the home opener for the Warriors.  WSU rallied for a 6-3 triumph in the opener, then won 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap.

GAME 1 RECAP
Wayne State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Emily Guzzo (London, Ont.) reached on a one-out fielding error and went to third on a single down the right field line by Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester).  Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) ripped the next pitch up the middle for an RBI single.

The Bulldogs answered with three runs in the top of the third.  Kacey Bouche hit a leadoff home run, while Evelyn Blood and Josie Prince each contributed RBI singles.

The Warriors evened the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth.  Guzzo worked a leadoff walk after falling behind 1-2 in the count.  She went to second on a ground out and stayed at second as Myers reached on a fielding error.  Following a lineout, Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) delivered a two-out, two-run double to left center.

In the bottom of the sixth, the WSU offense erupted for three runs on four hits, plus an FSU miscue.  Myers started the frame with a single, and went to third on the Bulldog error.  Psenicka plated Myers with the go-ahead run with an RBI single that was lined off the FSU pitchers leg.  Aryn Gallacher then returned to the circle replacing Mckenzie Cleland.  Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) produced an RBI single to center, and two batters later, Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) also had an RBI single to center to complete the scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE
Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) retired the final eight FSU batters to earn the victory.  She struck out seven and walked three, while allowing three earned runs on five hits in seven innings.

Gallacher (5-3) allowed three unearned runs on six hits in 4.2 innings.  She walked two and did not strikeout a batter.

Cleland surrendered three runs (two earned) on four hits in 1.1 innings.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Psenicka went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI, while Wrubel and Myers each had two singles as WSU pounded out 10 hits.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Paige Kortz and Blood each reached base twice via a hit and a walk, with both each scoring a run.

GAME 2 RECAP
Wayne State erupted for four runs in the bottom of the second.  Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) had a leadoff single and Myers worked a four-pitch one-out walk.  After a force out at third, Favela had an RBI single to left on a 1-2 offering to snap the scoreless tie.  A single by Psenicka with two outs loaded the bases, and Miller's shot down the left field line fell in for a three-run triple.

WSU added four more runs in the third.  Bonk started that frame with a four-pitch walk, and Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio) reached on an infield single.  Following a strikeout and a fielder's choice, Favela had an RBI single up the middle before Psenicka walked to load the bases.  Miller walked on five pitches to make it 6-0.  Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) laced an 0-2 pitch into left center scoring a pair of runs.

Ferris State had a base runner in both the fourth and fifth innings but neither could advance to second base.  The Bulldogs had one runner reach third base - with one out in the first, but the next two FSU batters were retired on a lineout to short and a strikeout.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk notched her second win of the season by blanking the Bulldogs on one hit over five innings.  She struck out seven and walked three.

Kristie Gray started for Ferris State and then relieved Kristina Baar.  Gray finished with surrendering four earned runs on five hits in three innings.  She walked one and did not record a strikeout.  Baar allowed four earned runs on three hits, while recording three outs.  She struck out one and walked three.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Miller and Favela each had two hits, with Miller driving in four, and Favela driving in two and scoring twice.  Psenicka reached base twice on a hit and walk and scored twice.
