Late Rally Dooms Baseball at Davenport

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (13-7, 0-1 GLIAC) started GLIAC play at Davenport (13-15, 3-2 GLIAC) on Friday afternoon and the Warriors led for the majority of the contest but a three-run eighth inning gave the Panthers a 3-1 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) started the second inning with a double to left center.  He tagged to third base on a fly out and scored on a sacrifice fly from Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) to give WSU a 1-0 advantage.

The Panthers put the first two runners on in the bottom of the second inning after back-to-back base hits.  However, starter Nicholas O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) (1-2) and WSU was able to escape without allowing any damage.

The Warriors got a doubles from Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) and Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) in the fifth and sixth innings, respectfully, but that would be all in either frame.  The Green & Gold was able to leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to keep the 1-0 lead untouched.

Davenport finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth inning after a single and a double started the frame to tie the game at 1-1.  Two more runs crossed home plate in the inning and DU led 3-1 needing just three outs for the win.

WSU put two runners on with a pair of walks in the ninth inning but was unable to score any runs.

AT THE PLATE
WSU mustered just three hits but drew three walks.  Finkbeiner, MacLean and Travis all had doubles.

ON THE MOUND
O'Dea was solid allowing two runs in seven innings and striking out five batters.  Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) worked an inning and allowed one run on two hits and a walk.
